Netball World Cup 2019 and what those letters mean!!

I have not seen any mention on here of another World Cup taking place at the moment and that is the Netball World Cup!

At primary school, as the boys went off to play Rugby, the girls were pulling on bibs with initials on and stepping out onto the netball court. I personally would have preferred to play netball than Rugby, but in those gender defined 1970's, we didn't get a choice!!

I was always fascinated by the letters. They define a players position on the court and if they should stray outside of their personal boundaries then they are deemed to be offside.

I'd want to be GS (goal shooter), they seem to just stand around and wait for the ball before trying to get it in the net!!

It makes for not much running about in my opinion as a netball court isn't very big and within that space your movement is limited. Not very physical either I'd guess.

Anyway, here are the letters and what they mean!

1. Goal Shooter
2. Goal Attack
3. Wing Attack
4. Centre
5. Wing Defence
6. Goal Defence
7. Goal Keeper

Why its called a goal and not a 'net' also confuses me....I need to watch a few more games and get a handle on this I guess!

Soto the current World cup and we have just four teams left;
Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa

Amazing what you find browsing the Sports pages and having discovered this, I will now have to cheer on England home to add another World Championship under their belt.

I give you Netball. A genuine Sport with cool initials!
