WiFi Hacking: Tools hackers are using to steal your data

in #steemstem6 years ago

As we enter the age where everything becomes wireless and connected the potential for information to be stolen becomes imminent. Understanding the tools used hackers to steal your passwords is the first step in protecting your passwords and data from being stolen.

Your WiFi password is not the only things at risk of being stolen, other vital information like your credit card numbers, pins, social security numbers can be stolen by eavesdroppers who will want to use this information for malicious purposes. You have to understand that as long as information is transferred from one point to the other, there is the possibility that someone is at the middle intercepting data as it travels from sender to receiver.

Stolen email accounts can be used to send hate emails on your behalf, so if the email is sent to your boss for instance then that can get you fired.

Understanding why this attacks take place is a subject for another discussion, but one that you should consider is that

Tools used by hackers

People generally search for Wi-Fi password cracking tools to get unauthorized access to those wireless other networks when their own network is down.

Here are few hacking tools used to infiltrate wireless Networks

Wireshack

Wireshark is a Network analyser tool used to analyse packets passing through the network. Wire shark is one of the best tools for network analysis. To get the best of Wireshark, set it the WiFi adapter to promiscuous mode. This tools is available for Window, Linux and Mac

Aircrack-ng

Aircrack-ng is one of the most popular tools used for WEP/WPA cracking. The Aircrack-ng suit contains the following: Airplay-ng - to generate traffic and client de-authentication, Airodump-ng - for packet capturing, Airbase-ng - to configure fake access points, Aircrack-ng - for wireless network cracking.

All these tools bundled into this software makes, Aircrack one of the most popular tools for wireless network cracking. It comes bundled with Kali Linux.

Reaver

Reaver targets wireless networks by exploiting WPS vulnerabilities. It performs brute force attacks against WPS and stores WPA/WPA2 passphrase in a register for quick recovery.

PixieWPS

PixieWPS is a tool that targets WPS vulnerabilities.it uses a method called the pixie dust approach which uses brute force to exploit the low or non existing entropy of vulnerable access points, by forcing the WPS pin online.

OclHashcat

This tool can carry out brute force and dictionary attacks on captured handshakes at a very fast rate when using a GPU. Using a GPU instead of a CPU can speed up the cracking process, the rate can even be up to 50,000 combinations per second.

Wash

Wash comes bundled with Linux and is used to find WPS enabled access points. Wifi networks with WPS disabled are less likely going to be the target of a hacker because the easiest and fastest ways of hacking the wireless network are ruled out.

Crunch

This is a tool for generating word lists in order to carry out dictionary attacks. The success rate of a dictionary is the quality of the word list, so it would be nice to create big word list. Crunch can also be used in conjunction with tools like Aircrack-ng, as this feature saves time by shortening the time it takes to generate passwords.

Protecting yourself from hacks

The need to protect yourself cannot be over emphasized. There are people willing to steal your private information just to exploit you. It has been discovered that there is a flaw in WPA2, and before now a lot of people were unaware of this weakness. This recent flaw may also leave you open to data theft.

Very informative post. I didn't know about most of these tools. Cain and Abel is also a really common tool amongst hackers that does some similar things as above but i don't think it's necessarily as strong as some of the ones you mentioned.

thanks @branbello for your comment, cain and abel is a very strong tool, but not as powerful as aircrack-ng..if you are comfortable with command line then using these tools will just be a breeze

Can you explain a little bit better as to what storing "WPA/WPA2 passphrase in a register for quick recovery" means?

thanks @oluebubesyd, what that means is that. it has a database where it stores random passphrases, when it is able to crack a wifi network, it then stores that particular passphrase in its database, so that when a hacker needs to connect to your wifi it takes a shorter amount of time to crack your password

Ohh. I see. Thank you for clarifying
