CELEBRATING BIRTHDAY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Today is my sister's birthday. In the Philippines, the celebrant usually treat her friends and family if she is abundant with money and giving gift only happens if someone is concerned. During childhood to teen days, of course it is the parents who prepare the celebration and treat the celebrant. This culture usually happens to the familes in the middle class. For sure, the first class people surprise the celebrant with flamboyant festivity and theme since they can afford the presentation. To a poor like me, my parents always prioritized to celebrate my birthday.

I have many cousins who never experienced celebrating birthday at all due to poverty. As they always say, reaching that age is their greatest gift than the festivity.

My ancestors, however, they like to celebrate their birthdays but they don't know what time, day,and year they born. That exact date to remember was never important in the past as long as they can find their safest shelters against foreign colonizations. My grandmother who I estimated a 75 years-old is mixed with a Spanish blood while his husband who'se my grandpa is mixed with Japanese line. This is accordingly to the chaos era in the prehistoric days where women were raped and abused by Spaniards colony as well as the Japanese. And this is one of the reasons why mostly of my elders are ignorant of their age.

Celebrating our age is important. Celebrating our age is not just preparing delicious foods and party, but a thanksgiving to God for giving us another age. It doesn't matter if we don't have preparation as long us we thanks to God for giving another life.
