Have you ever read stories of ones that make thousands of dollar by doing their work from home? The stories are true. One with coding for developing program can make thousands dollar monthly from home. He doesn’t go to office or workplace. He gets job from remote employer and is paid via online. All the stories are not fake. Some people earn money by doing projects from remote employers. This time, there are many opportunities to earn money without being 8 hours employees. It is called gig job.

WHAT IS GIG ECONOMY?

Let’s know the definition of gig job. What is a gig job?

A gig economy is a free market system in which temporary positions are common and organizations hire independent workers for short-term commitments. The term "gig" is a slang word for a job that lasts a specified period of time; it is typically used by musicians.

Gig economy has become trend since there are gigs marketplace. The most popular are fiverr, AirBnb, and Uber. Internet connection is one of cause the rise of supply and demand of gig jobs. The development of marketplace platform also increase the number of gig workers and users. Uber, grabbike, and Gojek (in Indonesia) are transportation services marketplace that pull in million people both from drivers, riders and users while fiverr serves skilled marketplace for developers, writers, graphic designers, and skill in other fields. Gig economy has given opportunities for a lot of people to do their job as freelancer. They don’t have to follow rules of normal working time. In gig economy everyone can take part and earn money. However, entering gig markets should match with the potential to be hired.

DRAWBACKS IN GIG ECONOMY

First time I heard about “gig”, I imagine that one with high income, more free time, millennial lifestyle and working from home. I try to find the proof of the imagination. I tried to enter a marketplace, I like writing. Yeah my skill is writing. I posted a service with low fees for an article. I waited for days and weeks. I didn’t get a single job at all. Then, I talked to Gojek riders. To be a Gojek / Uber rider no needs special skill. The requirements are motorcycle, smartphone, and legal driving or riding documents. To get a job is easy. The rider just needs to activate the application and wait for order. When there is an order to pick up a customer, the rider will be paid and share profit to the server of application. That ‘s easy job. How is the income. I interviewed some riders, they earned enough money for living but not for saving. It means that the job is not mine. It is not future job. Though, I have more free time but who is responsible when I am sick and can not get to work?

Alright, that is my a little experience in gig economy. Gig economy has many benefits like flexible worktime, highly paid, working from remote, but there are also some drawbacks.

FOR WORKERS

• The workers can not enhance their career path because they are based on short term contract.
• There is not stable income in the future.
• “No job no payment”. If a worker does not get a job contract , it means there will be no income.
• Freelance job will disrupt life balance from sleeping pattern, and activities.
• The contract may get cheaper payment. Companies will find cheaper services to do their work in gig economy to save their company budget.
• The worker should responsible for the work expense like internet charge, fuel or gas for grabbike riders, and taxes.

I don’t judge that all gig workers have no future life but I see it for myself. I appreciate and amaze to them who can earn high income from gig jobs. They can enjoy flexible lifestyle and get paid money whenever they want to do jobs. Thanks for reading. This my first content in GEMS communities.
