IFC S2R16: Create a Word
This is my entry for round 16 of the Information Finding Championship. This weeks challenge was to create a new word, along with a definition for that word. The overall goal of the challenge is to expand the imagined world of the IFC and to develop its culture and language.
Though it was somewhat challenging for me to come up with a word that was easy to say and that had a new meaning, I personally think that the idea of the challenge is pretty cool. Perhaps one day after multiple seasons of the IFC, we will have a collection of words that will be the begining of an entirely new language?
So with that being said here is my word:
Patellecoll
Pronunciation: Pah-tell-eh-coll
The word is a combination of the following three English words which have been translated back into their Latin roots:
- Open(ness) = patentibus
- Understand(ing) = intellegite
- Dialogue = colloquium
One of the issues that I see in society today is a difficulty among people in engaging in discourse. For instance, when people discuss polarizing ideas, ones that are based on an individual's beliefs and values or their political or religious views, often these conversations result in people getting offended or defensive. Similarly, when conversing with others about such topics often people do not listen to what the other person is saying or attempt to understand the others viewpoint. Rather, they try to convince the other person that their way of thinking is wrong and that they should switch their viewpoint to one that is inline with their own. To me this behavior creates tension in society and divides people into opposing sides that are based on different beliefs systems. Rather than bringing people together, conversation and discourse often seems to divide people and make them more distant to each other.
With all of that in mind, the definition of the word patellecoll is:
Open communication that comes from a place of understanding.
To engage in a patellecoll conversation is to speak openly with another person, while trying to understand their particular viewpoint. It is to recognize that people have different opinions and viewpoints and to welcome them; to remain open to new ideas different then ones own and to try to understand the other persons viewpoint.
The goal of such a conversation is to bring people together and facilitate human connection.

Ah jeez, that's a powerfully deep and meaningful word. Well thought out and coined. If I was a judge you would have my votes my friend. Great job. Makes my entry look like shit, literally. :-D
Just to make myself feel smarter I'm going to drop the word antidisestablishmentarianism (no spell check required on that).
Hahaha this is hilarious. I havent checked your entry out yet but will do so right away. Thanks for the compliment. I'm sure your word is a good one as well.

It's awesome that this word actually ends up sounding like what it means in a way in spite of you using the latin roots. I can hear "tele" and "call" in there which speaks clearly to it being a word related to communication. Even the "pal" part is coincidental, being from the UK where "pal" is an informal word for "friend", and this is the way you would expect, or at least hope, friends would communicate with each other.
In short, great fucking entry.
I never thought of the "pal" aspect of the word. I wish I could say that that was intentional but it wasnt. It is a nice coincidence though. Thanks for the comment!

It would certainly not work with mine, but if you are interested in attempting to genuinely get your word added to the English language and have it used by the masses, I reckon it would be difficult, but not impossible. I would start by adding it to the urban dictionary or any online dictionary that allows people to add words, then start using it everywhere as if it was always a legit word. Put it on memes and if you manage to get anything trending with your word in it, people will google it to know what it means and then the pompous ones will likely adopt it first just to seem like they know a word no one else does. And from there it will start to be used more and more.
Perhaps you fail.. But perhaps you do not?
That's actually really interesting and makes sense. Sounds like you put a lot of thought into this. It's a really good strategy for sure.

Well I shall take that as a compliment because the only thought I put into it was the amount I was able to think up during the time it took me to write that comment. I have never before thought about how to introduce a word into the English language, but I imagine if you thought about it longer there is probably a much better way to go about it.
Probably the best way would be to pay or convince someone with millions of followers to casually use it on a tweet(supposing you already added it to dictionaries so it is googlable). That one tweet could lead to the word getting picked up and utilised by tens of thousands of people. From there the rest would happen automatically and eventually the big dictionaries would be forced to add it to theirs.
That's another good point :)

I was very pleasantly surprised with this entry.
In fact.. I think this is one of the coolest entries in the history of the IFC.
The word you created is just.. Beyond awesome in my opinion.
Whether your word wins this round or not I want to see it become popularized and used by people.
It sounds catchy phonetically when pronounced, and the meaning of it is epic! I wish more people would communicate in patellecoll ways with each other!! I think the world would be a much better place if that was the case, and I know we've talked about this a lil bit before if I remember correctly on a post you made about the subject, but I can't tell you how often I try to discuss subjects with people and they are more interested in being right than in having a genuine conversation.. It's maddening sometimes just how much that happens and how rare good conversation is with people who are genuinely listening regardless of a particular desired outcome.
When I was talking to my friend about creating a new language, one of his main expressed desires was to create language that sort of.. Is more "positive" and which helps people to evolve and create a better world and your word is just perfect for that!! Awesome job.
I was a bit unsure of how this round would go, though.. You really exceeded my expectations and inspired me a lot with this one!
Excellent job man! Thank you for playing in another round and in the IFC in general.. I've enjoyed your participation throughout the entire season and every single entry of yours has been a pleasure to read, this one though just makes me extra grateful and happy. What a phenomenal job. Thank you for this contribution and thank you for being you. :)
Wow thanks. I appreciate it.
It's not an easy thing to come up with a new word but I really like the idea so I gave it some thought. You're right, I have spoken about this on several occasions so in a way, I guess the word did come a bit naturally to me. Your recommendation of combining multiple words together also really helped as well. Now that I think of it, I actually totally used your entire formula. After reading your word and its meaning, I started thinking about my own values and what is important to me. Once I had a list of values I combined a few of them into one idea then rearranged them until the new word had a sound that was easy enough to say. So overall your initial post really helped me with the challenge.
