Japanese knotweed (scientific name: reynoutria japonica) is a perennial herb in the knotweed buckwheat family, polygonaceae.

It is known by a variety of names depending on country and location, including fleeceflower, Himalayan fleece vine, billyweed, monkeyweed, monkey fungus, elephant ears, pea shooters, donkey rhubarb, American bamboo, and Mexican bamboo.

The leaves alternate in a zigzag pattern from the stem. It is broadly oval truncated at the base, 7 to 14 cm long and 5 to 12 cm wide, with whole edges.

The new leaves are dark red, turning green and rolling backward when young, and becoming heart-shaped with a flat base when older.
