Japanese holly, botanical name ilex crenata, is a type of flowering plant in the family aquifoliaceae, native to eastern China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Sakhalin.

Also called box-leaved holly, it is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a height of 3-5 m and a trunk diameter of up to 20 cm.

The leaves are glossy dark green and small, with wavy margins and sometimes thorns. The leaves are about 10 to 30 mm long and 10 to 17 mm wide.
