Sweetbay magnolia (scientific name: magnolia virginiana) is an evergreen or deciduous tree in the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae, usually with height less than 30 meters tall.

Also known simply as sweetbay (also called laurel magnolia, swampbay, swamp magnolia, white bay, or beaver tree), it is native to the lowlands and wetlands of the Atlantic coastal plain in the eastern United States, from Florida to Long Island. New York.

The leaves are simple (not lobed or pinnate), alternate, 6-12 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, with whole margins.

Sweetbay magnolia is widely cultivated for its large, showy, fragrant flowers, clean, attractive foliage, and rapid growth, making it an attractive tree for gardens and large yards.
