Bran Castle - Romania - Part III

in #romania7 years ago (edited)

 Dear Steemians,

I present today the  Bran Castle

In 1836, after the border between Transylvania and Wallachia moves to the mountains, at Pajura, the Bran Castle loses its military and commercial importance.

The fortress continues to perform an administrative function, but the Bran ceases to be a border and customs point of Austro-Hungary.

The imperial authorities accept the insistence of the Braşovists to repair between 1883 and 1886 the damage done to the castle during the revolution of 1848 and the Russian-Turkish War of 1877 and carried out extensive restoration works.

In 1888 the administration of Braşov gave up the castle of the regional forestry.

For 30 years the prestige of the castle has fallen.

Until 1918 it is inhabited by forestry brigadiers, foresters and forest inspectors from Brasov.

In 1918 Transylvania became part of Great Romania.

On 1 December 1920, the citizens of Brasov offered the castle following a unanimous decision of the city council headed by Mayor Karl Schnell, Queen Mary of Romania, described in the document as

"A great queen, who (...) spreads blessing everywhere he steps, and thus irresistibly conquers the hearts of the population of the whole country."

The castle becomes the favorite residence of the Queen Maria, she will restore it and arrange it to be used as the residence of the royal family.

From 1920 until 1932 the castle was turned into a royal summer residence.

The works are coordinated by the Czech architect Karel Liman, the same who designed the castles Peleş and Pelişor. The deep 57-meter deep well of the castle does not provide enough water, so it is obtained by adduction from natural springs located along the valley.

In 1932, a hydroelectric power station is being built along the Turcu stream, which allows illumination of the castle.

It is also connected to Bran, Şimon and Moeciu. Thanksgiving people thank Queen Mary, to whom she refers:

"Poor, pure Romanians, who in the near future could not have this advantage."

The land around the castle is turned into an English park with two ponds and a Tea House.

In order to make it easier for the sick arthritis queen to cross the road between the castle and the park, a lift is installed.

There are also other buildings such as a guest house, a wooden church, staff dwellings, stables and garages.
