Travel to Thassos - a charming emerald island. One story of a Greek green island!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

In my intro post I mentioned how much I love Greece, but so far I haven't written anything about that country. So I start the story of this magnificent land with the northernmost island in the Aegean Sea - Thassos.

The holiday on this island was unforgettable. Thassos is truly a charming island. It's called "Floating Forest" because it is full of greenery, pine forests and olive groves. The people of this island say that it has more than a million trees of olive tree. That's why Thassos is known for its high quality olive oil. What you must try on Thassos as well is a high-quality honey. Beekeeping is very developed on this island.

The most important are the beaches! There are many of them - large, sandy, urban, with many cafes, gravel, commercial and small, hidden, with emerald pure water, surrounded by pine forests...

Beginning - Keramoti, ferry and seagulls

But let's start from the beginning. Followed by hungry and a bit aggressive seagulls, from Keramoti to Limenas, the capital of Thassos, we drove by ferry. It was a real pleasure to feed them. Seagulls are incredibly precise when they take a piece of food from your hand.

Vuk was very patient waiting for the bird to catch a piece of his food. In fact this is the pose of most people on the ferry.

POTOS - small fishing city

Our destination was Potos, a nice town located in the southwest of the island. Potos has two beaches, one sandy and very visited and the other smaller that partly belongs to the hotel Alexandra beach. The hotel is open to those who are not guests of the hotel, so you can have a drink on the beautiful terrace and use the hotel's facilities. This beach was closer to us, so we spent most of the time on it.

Potos has no classical promenade by the sea. Above the main beach there are cafes, restaurants and tavernas. The most impressive part of the city are small paved streets which intertwine each other. They contain souvenir shops, shops, bakeries, goldsmiths, fast food restaurants ...

Marble beach - turquoise white world

Thassos is an island that has to be explored and offers a lot of things, but it takes a little action for a full experience. So the road took us to the Marble beach, which is considered the most attractive on Thassos. The color of the sand is unevenly white, due to small marble pebbles. The sea is turquoise, which is a rarity on Thassos.

The scene is fairy-tale.

The marble beach is quite visited, so a crowd of people can spoil your impression. We were lucky to go out of season and the experience was incredible. Nearby there is a marble mine.

Teologos - the spirit of traditional Greece.

And now something completely different - Theologos, a beautiful mountain village located ten kilometers from Potos.
It is easily reached by car. By symbolic price we went to these village by local bus. Along the way, we saw tourists who went to this village on foot.

Each travel guide will recommend that you visit some of the restaurants and order lamb. In Theologos we bought fantastic domestic cold-fried virgin olive oil.

Although all rustic, magical, with houses built in the Macedonian style, Theologos is today a living village with a large number of inhabitants. In fact, 2/3 of the island belongs to this village. It used to be the capital of Tassos.

This unusual village represents significant cultural capital. The construction of new and reconstructed old houses is limited and must be within the standard for the preservation of the cultural and historical values of the village.

Walking in the narrow streets of Theologos is like a return to the past. So we spent most of our time wandering around and exploring this fantastic village.

LEGEND FOR THE END

In Greece everything starts with a legend, but I saved this story for the end! This legend says that the great Greek god Zeus fell in love with beautiful Europe, so he decided to kidnap her and take her to Crete to be together. But, her father, the Phoenician king Agenor, organized an expedition to find his daughter and return home. He sent four sons and order them to found their sister! One of them - Tasos, searching for his sister, came to this beautiful island. He was fascinated by the beauty of the island. Since he was not allowed to return home without Europe, he decided to stay, and since then, the island has his name.

The Thasos is much more than what I have shown and felt. A modern legend says that anyone who comes to Thassos must return. It's the same with us. A large part of this island has remained unexplored for us.
