Eating sugar and hidden sugars
High blood sugar levels associated with diabetes lead to retina damage.
The retina is the layer on the back of the eye that captures the images and transports them as nerve signals to the brain to perceive as sight. The longer you are Diabetic or Pre-Diabetic the greater your chances of Retinal Damage.
Pre-Diabetes
86 million Americans (greater than one out of three) a condition called pre-diabetes, with vision problems being one of the primary complications.
What Is Pre-diabetes?
It is a condition where a person’s blood glucose levels are higher than the norm, but still not high enough to detect a diabetic condition.
Signs or Symptoms
Vision Changes are a main symptom from developed retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels in the light-sensitive tissue at the retina (back of the eye ) during the prediabetic stage, before they have been officially diagnosed with diabetes. Blurred vision is also a prominent symptom, so if you are having vision changes, get your blood sugar levels tested.

- Constantly feeling tired
- Feeling sudden sadness without reason
- Unexplained weight gain
- Blurred vision that is increasing with trouble seeing at night
- Headaches and sore throats that come and go
- Dizzy spells or lightheadedness
- Breathing issues during sleep
- Digestive issues

- Feeling groggy after meals
- Elevated blood pressure
- After every meal, you crave sweet
- Frequent yeast infections
- Cuts or bruises don’t heal quickly
- Constant hunger
- Constant joint aches
- Constant muscle and joint stiffness
- Burning feet and/or numbness in toes when when standing
- Swollen ankles and feeling of puffiness sitting for long periods
- If you don’t eat, you get grumpy, nauseous or shaky.
- Frequent night time urination
- Waking up in middle of the night with your heart pounding
What to do
Well after medical testing and advice stop eating sugars and hidden sugars... generally anything processed from breads, pastas, soda, alcohol and more.. your research here is crucial.
A Paleo or mostly vegetable (Not root vegetables) diet with some protein and fats can help reduce this condition and you may even see improvements in you eyesight.

My diabetes (Type II) caused cataracts in both eyes that came on very quickly. I know what it is like to go blind. Right before my cataract surgery my eye surgeon said I was legally blind. After the surgery my eyesight was back to perfectly clear.
I now have yearly appointments for my diabetic eye care.

I have my Type II diabetes well under control. I changed my diet and stopped drinking soda. I learned what foods spike my blood sugar (mainly potatoes, i.e. french fries) and about the beneficial foods and spices that promote health.
Yes, I got a wake up call.
