Assange Sentenced to 50 Weeks in Jail for Skipping Bail, Twice as Long as Others (Like a Manslaughter Convict)

in #assange5 years ago (edited)

Today, Assange had the "law" book thrown at him as he received a 50 week sentence for skipping the terms of his bail and not appearing before the court in 2012.

In 2012 when Assange was arrested by the UK in order to eventually be extradited to Sweden for alleged rape charges, Assange knew that Sweden might extradite him to the US upon request. He was no fool. Rather than take that risk, he chose to seek refuge in at the Ecuadorian embassy in London when he was released on bail.

At court, Assange said he was "struggling with difficult circumstances" at the time, and apologized to whoever "considers I've disrespected them".

"I did what I thought at the time was the best or perhaps the only thing that I could have done."

Can you blame him? His lawyer, Mark Summers QC, said Assange was in fear of his life to be renditioned to the US.

"As threats rained down on him from America, they overshadowed everything."

Assange issued a letter of apology which reads:

I apologise unreservedly to those who consider that I have disrespected them by the way I have pursued my case.

This is not what I wanted or intended.

I found myself struggling with terrifying circumstances for which neither I nor those from whom I sought advice could work out any remedy.

I did what I thought at the time was the best and perhaps the only thing that could be done - which I hoped might lead to a legal resolution being reached between Ecuador and Sweden that would protect me from the worst of my fears.

I regret the course that this took; the difficulties were instead compounded and impacted upon very many others.

Whilst the difficulties I now face may have become even greater, nevertheless it is right for me to say this now.

As a result of him fleeing the persecution of the US, he failed to appear before the UK court, which violated the terms of his bail. This is the why he's being jailed for 50 weeks, which is the maximum sentence to for someone who skips bail.

Judge Deborah Taylor told Assange considered his actions to be a "most serious offense" as the BBC put it. She said:

"By hiding in the embassy you deliberately put yourself out of reach, while remaining in the UK."

She also claimed that "brinngin him to justice" caost the UK taxpayers 16 million pounds. Seriously? Why the fuck did it ost them 16 million? Oh right, having cops stalk him for years just to "bring him to justice" for evading a court hearing to be extradited to Sweden. I wonder if they would have done that if it were someone else who was avoiding going to court?

The judge justified her verdict in a half-assed way about how grave this "offense" was:

"Whilst you may have had fears as to what may happen to you, nonetheless you had a choice, and the course of action you chose was to commit this offence."

The judge, and probably the UK "legal" system takes his actions of exposing criminals activity in governments as a "crime" worthy of the most severe consequences they can throw at him with their legally concocted framework of "laws". Other criminals in the UK, like the so-called speedboat killer who was eventually convicted of manslaughter, was only given 6 months jail for breaching his bail terms and not appearing before the court.

Julian Assange's sentence, for seeking and receiving asylum, is twice as much as the sentencing guidelines. The so-called speedboat killer, convicted of manslaughter, was only sentenced to six months for failing to appear in court.

This is the corruption of justice that Assange faces. He was sentenced to twice the jail term of a manslaughterer, and twice the jail therm that is recommended for someone who fails to appear before court and breachers their bail conditions.

The UK judge views his actions as more criminal that a manslaughter case where someone was killed. And he killed no one. On the contrary, Assange helped people become more free in our world by dispelling the lies and deception of the powerful criminal authoritarian governments. And they don't like it, neither do their yes-men judges who uphold that authority.

As WikiLeaks said, this verdict shows how vindictive the authoritarian structure is towards Assange for his assault on their "holy" institution of government that they bow to.

Julian Assange's sentence is as shocking as it is vindictive. We have grave concerns as to whether he will receive a fair extradition hearing in the UK.

As Assange was taken away at the end of the hearing, he raised a fist as he often does, and supporters raised theirs back, with some shouting ""shame on you" at the court. WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson called this an outrage, but is looking at the bigger fight down th road: extradition to the US.

Hrafnsson told reporters this is "a question of life and death" for Assange, and "also a question of life and death for a major journalist principle". Indeed it is. The whole premise for the US charges are a joke, as they can apply to many journalists, yet are only being hung on Assange due to his effective publishing of damning material about the US government.

Sadly, this is where sayings like "no good deed goes unpunished" come from. Assange is being punished for the the crime of exposing criminals.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

"By hiding in the embassy you deliberately put yourself out of reach, while remaining in the UK."

REMAINING in the UK...??? Isn't an Embassy, under varies rules, agreements/treaty' etc. respected as a Sovereign nation in itself, regardless where it is located, it is considered 'not' within or under the jurisdiction of the 'host' government?

Therefore "being 'in' the UK is a somewhat 'false' statement. Assange was 'not' "within" the UK while 'inside' the Ecuadorian Embassy.

Is it not similar to being inside of the Vatican City, Washington DC, London or any other Sovereign, separate State/Rule?

She also claimed that "bringin him to justice" cost the UK taxpayers 16 million pounds. Seriously? Why the fuck did it cost them 16 million? Oh right, having cops stalk him for years just to "bring him to justice" for evading a court hearing to be extradited to Sweden.

Another 'false' ignorant statement; if the 'stupid' government of the UK and it's localities 'wasted' 16 million dollars of the 'peoples' money on 'stalking' Assange...It was 'wasted' on behalf of requests from 'other' government entities like 'Sweeden' so, it is 'actually' SWEEDEN then, who cost them and 'owes' them the 16 million...along with any other Government who pressured the UK (if so)

AND...'Falsely' turning a fearful VICTIM, fleeing for their safety/lives into a "criminal" is 'actually' a criminal act by an 'evil' entity (in my opinion)

The whole Assange/Wikileaks fiasco is so mired in twisted fakery and subverted truth, that we as the people, will never know with certainly, what the TRUTH actually is; even when it is squarely placed in front of our faces (A much desired and effective tool of those in power)

e.g. - Ex CIA Director William Casey's quote, below:

“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.”

Exactly, they agree to the sovereign territory as long as it suits them. They are evil indeed, spinning unreality to a reality for masses to eat up.

they agree to the sovereign territory as long as it suits them. They are evil indeed

Undeniably evil...

Like always UK & Europe, and the rest of western civilization, have coward politicians following orders from the puppet master the US.
They always play ball with the americans, and for politicians ,serving the US, Assange is just a coin they are using to get financial benefits and loans.
The extradition of Julian from Europe shows that our democracy is dead too, and decayed to a level that don't care for the man and women's rights.
I don't see public support for him, meaning the citizens are veiled with US ideology and news standardization.
Some people are still making something but out of the public's eyes, but if they are caught they will pay with their lives too, because the public is out of self-awareness of who their benefactors are, and they protect their own jailers with an happy servility.
Let's keep fighting, even when everybody is denying life values and freedom.
Nice work my friend.

Yeah, we live in an illusion. Evil is veiled in the appearance of good, and most people are living that dream unreality. Thanks ;)

One possibility too, is that the UK contingent of the Five Eyes arrangement doesn't want Assange testifying in the US, either due to Brit involvement in spying on the Trump campaign

I don't think any of the Five Eye's are too afraid of him testifying. The grand jury is secret, and the public already doesn't care about his plight or the info he's put out, if he does have something bad to say that he hasn't yet... well it won't matter much in the circumstances he's in ... :/

It depends on whether Trump is serious about things, or just playing kabuki theatre. I think things are more dangerous for the Deep State right now than people think, and even if Trump is just a front, blatantly killing Assange right now would be a misstep for them. For me, too many factors to predict things.

Best of luck to Assange, tho

I really feel bad for him. I get the impression they're never going to leave this guy alone now. When that's over, he'll have the US to deal with.

Yeah, I know what you mean. He's in for some hard times ahead, and he's already been dealing with some hard times :/

If you only had two options, who would you rather babysit your kids? A group of Unitedstatian soldiers or Julian Assange? Today is local elections day in England - let’s hope they won’t leave their brains at the door before casting their votes. Right wing parties are streptococcus bacteria slowly killing the world.

LOL, pretty easy to answer ;) I wanted order following trained murderers :P

What will be the outcome of the RAPE charge from Sweden, I guess Swedish government are waiting for the US govt to determine whether dual criminal liabilities won’t amount to infringement of his Human Rights. Meanwhile, can he possibly serve another jail term in Sweden on the same legal issue?

One has been dropped, and the other has evidence that contradicts the alleged victim's claims. I think Sweden will pass and the US will be the ones to get him next.

Ssshh not two loud mate. They dont like playbook layed bare. Assange could be extradieted while servin 1 sentance if reqwesting cuntry agrees Assange will be locked up for at leest length of sentance in sending country. Stack his cases one after the after and he be locked for rest of life. No need make matters. Serial not paralell.

So they're using illegal methods of sentencing to sentence for him committing 'illegal' crimes. hmm....

Welcome to the illusion :/
