Travel Tip #3: Bergen, Norway | Bryggen, UNESCO World Heritage

in #norway7 years ago

My third travel tip is going to be about Bryggen in Bergen. Bryggen (The Dock) lies between the seven famous mountains in Bergen, and is Norway's third largest tourist attraction.

If you have the time, and it is not raining, I recommend renting a bike. It makes it a lot easier to get around in the city, and you also get to see a lot more of what the city has offer.

"Bryggen was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, by Criterion (iii): Bryggen bears the traces of social organization and illustrates the use of space in a quarter of Hanseatic merchants that dates back to the 14th century. It is a type of northern “fondaco”, unequalled in the world, where the structures have remained within the cityscape and perpetuate the memory of one of the oldest large trading ports of Northern Europe."

The large white ship is called Statsraad Lemkhul. It is based in Bergen, and contracted out for various purposes, including serving as a school ship for the Royal Norwegian Navy.

Today Bryggen consists of many restaurants, pubs and small boutiques. A must-see when visiting Bergen.

I hope you liked my post, and let me know if you have any questions. Have a nice day!

Kristin.

"If you have the time, and it is not raining" does it rain a lot at Bergen? I remember it was raining as well when I went in the summer

Yes it does. Bergen had 191 days with rain last year! But it's still beautiful! Bergen is known for its rainy days.

No wonder .... 😀
