SHOULD I USE A MARTINGALE DOG COLLAR?

in #life7 years ago

Originally designed for dog breeds whose necks were larger than their heads, martingale dog collars have become more popular with dog owners who prefer the more gentle control of a martingale collar over a traditional choke chain. Greyhounds, Whippets and Italian Greyhounds are dog breeds who are ideal candidates to use a martingale collar since it is very easy for these types of dogs to back up and slip their heads out of a traditional collar. Martingale collars are also preferred by dog trainers who need to have firm control over the dog during coaching.

A martingale dog collar will fit loose and comfortable until engaged. If you have a dog breed whose unique neck and head shape make a traditional collar uncomfortable and restricting then a martingale collar may be a better option. Martingale collars are designed to gently close when a dog tries to slip out of his collar, using two loops to cause tension on the leash which in turn pulls the collar taut so the dog cannot get out of his collar. Though the action does tighten the collar around the dog’s neck it is not so tight as to be restricting or uncomfortable. If you have a dog with a large neck but small head it is very easy to pull a traditional collar too tight to keep him from escaping but this will lead to an uncomfortable fit and can cause problems with his breathing.

Dog owners may have a preference for a particular collar and no one collar is right or wrong for specific dog breeds. However, if you are training a young pup or own a dog breed who can easily wiggle out of a traditional leather or nylon dog collar then you may want to try using a martingale dog collar and see if you don’t have better luck.
