Weaving Research

Our adventure in Kutch continued with visits to some local weavers. This chap was my favourite.

As you can see he invited us to have a turn. He made it look so easy but it really is an incredible skill! There is so much precision and calculation involved, not to mention the coordination you need to have everything moving in the right direction simultaneously. I could have watched him weave for hours!

Purchasing directly from a maker is such an amazing experience for me. Seeing the work and care that goes into each piece, and hearing the histories, traditions and meanings of the designs and process really gave each item meaning. I have been moving into minimalism in my life for the past year or so, and this experience affirmed yet again for me that I no longer want to mindlessly purchase and consume items. Purchasing an item which adds value to my life, and which I know directly adds value to the life of the artisan is a choice I want to continue to make.

I purchased a new scarf to bring home with me - and it's already become my favourite item! Having this great memory of this place and artist really fills me with good feelings when I wear it.

Ah gorgeous scarf! I don't think I used my time in India wisely enough. X

hopefully you can come back again some day! :)

This sounds like an amazing experience Kristen. I love fabric and material and to watch it being made and then buying it would be a magical experience for me too. I’m jealous!

Yes it was really amazing. I didn't even really have an interest in textiles before so it was all new to me and very eye opening. More posts to come about our research trip. If you ever come to India you must go to Kutch region of Gujarat. Rajasthan is supposed to have incredible textiles too!

I totally agree with you that in this world sometimes all it takes to be happy is just being contented of the minimal things. We also need to appreciate all things no matter how big or small, how lavish or minimal it is my steem buddy!

I love it! It would be amazing to visit a place like that and just really experience the culture v.s. capitalistic garbage.
