प्रस्तुत कहानी का उद्देश्य शत्रुओं से सावधानी रखने की सीख देती है
एक चिड़ा पेड़ पर घोंसला बनाकर मजे से रहता था। एक दिन वह दाना पानी के चक्कर में अच्छी फसल वाले खेत में पहुंच गया। वहां खाने पीने की मौज से बड़ा ही खुश हुआ। उस खुशी में रात को वह घर आना भी भूल गया और उसके दिन मजे में वहीं बीतने लगे।
इधर शाम को एक खरगोश उस पेड़ के पास आया जहां चिड़े का घोंसला था। पेड़ जरा भी ऊंचा नहीं था। इसलिए खरगोश ने उस घोंसलें में झांक कर देखा तो पता चला कि यह घोंसला खाली पड़ा है। घोंसला अच्छा खासा बड़ा था इतना कि वह उसमें खरगोश आराम से रह सकता था। उसे यह बना बनाया घोंसला पसंद आ गया और उसने यहीं रहने का फैसला कर लिया।
कुछ दिनों बाद वह चिड़ा खा-खा कर मोटा ताजा बन कर अपने घोंसलें की याद आने पर वापस लौटा। उसने देखा कि घोंसलें में खरगोश आराम से बैठा हुआ है। उसे बड़ा गुस्सा आया, उसने खरगोश से कहा, 'चोर कहीं के, मैं नहीं था तो मेरे घर में घुस गए हो? चलो निकलो मेरे घर से, जरा भी शरम नहीं आई मेरे घर में रहते हुए?
खरगोश शान्ति से जवाब देने लगा, 'कहां का तुम्हारा घर? कौन सा तुम्हारा घर? यह तो मेरा घर है। पागल हो गए हो तुम। अरे! कुआं, तालाब या पेड़ एक बार छोड़कर कोई जाता हैं तो अपना हक भी गवां देता हैं। यहां तो जब तक हम हैं, वह अपना घर है। बाद में तो उसमें कोई भी रह सकता है। अब यह घर मेरा है। बेकार में मुझे तंग मत करो।'
यह बात सुनकर चिड़ा कहने लगा, 'ऐसे बहस करने से कुछ हासिल नहीं होने वाला। किसी धर्मपण्डित के पास चलते हैं। वह जिसके हक में फैसला सुनायेगा उसे घर मिल जाएगा।'
उस पेड़ के पास से एक नदी बहती थी। वहां पर एक बड़ी सी बिल्ली बैठी थी। वह कुछ धर्मपाठ करती नजर आ रही थी। वैसे तो यह बिल्ली इन दोनों की जन्मजात शत्रु है लेकिन वहां और कोई भी नहीं था इसलिए उन दोनों ने उसके पास जाना और उससे न्याय लेना ही उचित समझा। सावधानी बरतते हुए बिल्ली के पास जा कर उन्होंने अपनी समस्या बताई।
उन्होंने कहा, 'हमने अपनी उलझन तो बता दी, अब इसका हल क्या है? इसका जबाब आपसे सुनना चाहते हैं। जो भी सही होगा उसे वह घोंसला मिल जाएगा और जो झूठा होगा उसे आप खा लें।' 'अरे रे !! यह तुम कैसी बातें कर रहे हो, हिंसा जैसा पाप नहीं इस दुनिया में। दूसरों को मारने वाला खुद नरक में जाता है। मैं तुम्हें न्याय देने में तो मदद करूंगी लेकिन झूठे को खाने की बात है तो वह मुझसे नहीं हो पाएगा। मैं एक बात तुम लोगों को कानों में कहना चाहती हूं, जरा मेरे करीब आओ तो !
खरगोश और चिड़ा खुश हो गए कि अब फैसला हो कर रहेगा। और उसके बिलकुल करीब गए। फिर क्या? करीब आए खरगोश को पंजे में पकड़ कर मुंह से चिड़े को बिल्ली ने नोंच लिया। दोनों का काम तमाम कर दिया। अपने शत्रु को पहचानते हुए भी उस पर विश्वास करने से खरगोश और चिड़े को अपनी जानें गवांनी पड़ीं।
