CONTEST ! Choices! What will it be? #8 The Fifth Bridge Of BejasteemCreated with Sketch.

Hi Steemians,

I have the honor to participate once again today in the competition organized outside the engagement challenge which will start next week, for which I thank the Steem for ladies community which offers us this free space by diversifying the subjects to write our thoughts and reflections. Personally I chose this week the subject "Bridge" and I hope that my post will please you.

When you stay in Beja and pass by the side of its green valley, several things dazzle the eye. First of all, there are these vast green grounds covered with a beautiful green lawn and within which, here and there, we discover flowerbeds colored like poppies of a beautiful bright red. As soon as you arrive, you find yourself in a haven of peace where life flows peacefully and where you would like to stop for long hours lazing in the grass.

This is of course doable, except that at times, the silence of this nature gives way to another noise: that of the train passing over the Fifth Bridge.

This bridge is also the second thing that strikes the eye, because it majestically crosses the entire valley like a snake made of concrete. Its presence in this beautiful country setting seems quite incongruous, but we must admit that it adds more charm to the place. Without him, the valley would seem a little too empty. In short, it was certainly erected in an unusual environment for an infrastructure of this scale, but in the end, we like it where it is and it is not the train passengers who will say the opposite.

The Fifth Bridge is an arched bridge composed of a total of 12 arches. It is a railway bridge which means that the track is only accessible to the train.

The bridge has 350m in length, 23.5m wide and 38m high, It is still operational today and allows the connection between Beja and Tunis.

Indeed, if from below, the train seems tiny on the bridge, from above, the view is simply superb. It's as if you were on board an airplane as the two ravines surrounding the bridge are dizzying. And apart from this feeling of floating in the air, we also appreciate admiring this beautiful green valley which is, know it, among the greenest regions of Tunisia.

Admittedly, it is an unusual name for a bridge and yet, this is how it is known throughout Tunisia and around the world.

This name was given to it to pay homage to the 5th Engineer Regiment. It is to this unit that we owe the line between the towns of Béja and Mateur and the construction of a temporary bridge which allowed the construction of the Fifth Bridge.

Regarding the construction of the Fifth Bridge, it took three years to complete. Indeed, the work began in 1912 and did not end until 1915. From 1915 until 1977, it linked the towns of Beja to Bizerte. It was not until 1977 that it was then diverted to Tunis because of the construction of the Sidi Salem dam.

The latter is now considered the largest dam in Tunisia. If its construction forced the deviation of the Fifth Bridge it is quite simply because the dam was set up on the course of the Medjerda. The construction of the dam began in June 1977 and was not completed until 1981.

The description of Beja and its green valley is absolutely breathtaking! Your vivid portrayal of the vast green grounds, adorned with a lush, emerald lawn and vibrant flowerbeds reminiscent of bright red poppies, instantly transports me to a place of tranquility and beauty. I can almost feel the sense of peace washing over me as I imagine strolling through this idyllic setting.

Your choice of words, like "dazzle" and "haven of peace," perfectly captures the enchantment and serenity of the surroundings.

Keep it up my dear friend. Best of luck for the contest 👍
