AAA review: Going South (2012), Korean Heartbreaking Romantic Gay Movie

A good movie can be understood from many angles. In my opinion, the movie looks good in two categories. One is to break into audiences’ heart and resonate with audiences. One is that the filming, conceiving, and editing of the entire film surprised audiences. "Going South" belongs to the latter category. This movie strives to break the traditional narrative style, and does not follow the path of reciting memories. It is a clever way to intersperse the protagonist's past into the dialogue. This kind of conversational recollection combines the development of the plot. The combination is perfect, and it feels natural.

In addition to describing the protagonist's past from the conversation, the three diaries in the film are also a unique way of expression. The three diaries record the changes in the sentiment of Chief Executive Jun-young after leaving the military camp. From the beginning to the end, this relation only last 4 months. And Gi-tae is remembering the sentence, which is “I still like you.” Maybe he will remember for a lifetime. What makes me most funny is the sound "meow" that Gi-tae has emerged from time to time. The most wild free cat sound. However, at this time shouting out from Gi-tae's mouth is full of despair. Behind this desperate sound, there are a lot of sweet memories that they both share. The phrase "Do you still wear the kitten underwear that I gave to you", as a note of the Gi-tae meow, is perfect and heartbreaking.

The lines of the film are also very interesting. Especially when I watch this movie from the view of being a gay, it is a heartfelt voice. It is amazing that the director has grasped the psychological and current status of gay so well. When Gitae said "coward" to Jun-young when he was in the mud.
