Toccoa Falls Nearly Frozen!

in #photography8 years ago

This is Toccoa Falls in Toccoa, Georgia. It's on Toccoa Falls College campus but it is open to the public to view. It is only a short, paved walk from the parking area too so it is very easy to get to. I went there today to check it out because it had been so cold lately I thought that maybe that it had frozen over. I was partially correct, it was really close to getting frozen, some of the river that forms at the bottom was frozen. I actually walked on it! I didn't get a video of that unfortunately but I did want to share some of the pictures and videos from this.

This is from the bridge that you cross on the way to the parking lot. You can see how much of it is frozen but even more of it is frozen on up the path.

Here is a video I made with my phone, I even edited it on my phone! A little back story on the Falls...

Toccoa Falls is 186 ft tall and the word Toccoa is the Cherokee word for 'beautiful'. There are only 4 waterfalls taller than Toccoa Falls in the United States east of the Mississippi:
Crabtree Falls in Virginia, cascading 1,000 feet (300 m), including one drop of 400 feet (120 m).
Caledonia Cascade in Georgia includes a 262-foot (80 m) drop.
Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee, 256 feet (78 m).
Taughannock Falls in New York, 215 feet (66 m) I have some pictures of this in a previous post from NY

There is a large stone memorial there that commemorates the lives lost of the dam break of 1977. Thirty-nine people died when this happened and they did not rebuild the dam after this disaster. It's a beautiful place to visit but make sure you bring $2 per person to get in. They have it gated off and you'll have to go through the shop to access the falls and they will charge you there. Also you can bring your dogs but you'll have to keep them on a leash.

I'm fortunate enough to live close by these falls so I can see them several times a year and I highly recommend going by to visit it if you're near the area.

It's crazy to have a waterfall of that size on a college campus! Looks like the accessibility makes them easy to visit throughout the year, thanks for sharing the winter view.

Frozen waterfalls are so cool. I wonder if it will freeze slowly enough to create an ice wall to climb? That would be awesome. BTW, I am a curator with @ocd and would love to nominate your post.
