THE VOICE OF ONE FROM THE WILDERNESS
John 1:23-24
He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
I am the voice … - See the notes at Matthew 3:3.
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Were of the Pharisees-
For a record of this group, see the notes Matthew 3:7
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Why they are specifically mentioned isn't positively known. A significant number of the "Sadducees" went to his baptism Matthew 3:7, yet it appears that they didn't participate in sending to him to recognize what was the plan of John. This situation is one of those accidental and sensitive implications which would jump out at no impostor in producing a book, and which demonstrate that the writers of the New Testament were straightforward men and comprehended what they avowed. Since:
1.The Pharisees made an awesome part out of the Sanhedrin, Acts 23:6. It is plausible that a delegation from the Sanhedrin would be of that gathering.
2.The Pharisees were exceptionally determined of rituals and traditions, of customs and services. They observed many. They trusted that they were legitimate, Mark 7:3-4. Obviously, they trusted that those ceremonies may be expanded, however they didn't assume that it should be possible aside from by the authority of a prophet or of the Messiah. Whenever, along these lines, John came "baptizing through water" - adding a ceremony to be seen by his followers - immersing Gentiles, as well as Jews - the question was whether he had authority to initiate another rite; regardless of whether it was to be adopted among the services of religion. In this question the Sadducees felt no enthusiasm, for they dismissed every single such custom without a moment's delay; however the Pharisees thought it was worth request, and it was an inquiry on which they felt themselves exceptionally approached to go about as the ministers of the services of religion.
