Art thou Elias? -

This is the Greek method for writing Elijah. The Jews expected that Elijah would show up before the Messiah came. See the notes at Matthew 11:14.

And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

They suspected that it would be the genuine Elijah came back from paradise. In this sense John denied that he was Elijah; however he didn't deny that he was the Elias or Elijah which the prophet Isaiah said in Matthew 3:3;

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

For he quickly continues to state John 1:23 that he was sent, as it was anticipated that Elijah would be, to set up the way for the Lord; so that, while he rectified their false ideas about Elijah, he so plainly expressed to them his actual character that they may comprehend that he was extremely the one anticipated as Elijah.

That prophet -

It is conceivable that the Jews supposed that not just "Elijah" would return before the happening to the Messiah, yet in addition "Jeremiah." See the notes at Matthew 16:14;

And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

Some have supposed, nonetheless, that this question has reference to the expectation of Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15.

The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Thank you for the post. As reincarnation is referred to in the title, which is a heathen believe, I would have like a clear conclusion that John Baptist was not the reincarnation of anyone. You do quote the texts but I would have liked it if you summed it up, in the end, stating it clearly. It may not always be Christians who read the posts, and we cannot just accept that they will come to the right conclusion. Blessings!
