The Interest of Others.

Phil 2:4 says “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Here the apostle Paul is describing the mindset of the Just. Among all the other dispositions of the mind stated in the previous verses, we also need to have a mindset that looks away from gratifying ourselves, unto the one that works to meet the needs of others. We are not self-consumed. We have broken every bond of self-love; we have left the general realm where many live, that is, the realm that is fixated on the glory of self; we walk in the realm that continually gives attention to the needs of others. A care similar to the one displayed by the good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37.

The word ‘others’ is not limited to only our family and loved ones, but it includes affection (a godly one) even for those who openly affirm they are enemies of the cross. Though such persons are ignorant of the truth, it does not mean we should neglect to extend the love of God, the love of Jesus to them. To offer prayers for them is not enough, but like Jesus, we need to be actively concerned about their welfare. We need to make their interest our interest.

How is it possible that the love of God (the love that compelled the Son of God to die in the place of those who hated Him and His Father) has been lavishly shed abroad in our hearts, and we can easily turn a blind eye when others have needs? We do not have such an attitude. But like Christ, who gladly gave himself up for us, we too must be willing and ready to be interested in the things that interests others. We are not told to look away from our personal need(s), but our personal need(s) MUST not prevent us from doing the things we know will advance the basic human dignity of others - this is what it means to be a Christian.

Look out and meet the interests of others.
