New work with Australian beauty, Janis McGavin!

Good evening, Steemit! Hopefully we’re all recovering from eclipse hangover and our retinas are still in tact. Man, Minnesota really dropped the ball here. All clouds except for maybe 40 seconds. It was great to see @guthrie’s excitement during that brief period when he yelled “Dad, I can see it! I SEE IT!”. Science milestone, even if it was short.

Currently, I’m at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport. WAY early for a change. I swear, I can’t find a happy medium. Typically, I cut it so close I walk in to an empty gate and the flight staff asks my name then hurries me on to the plane. This morning, I woke up at at 3:00a.m. for a 6:00a.m. departure and again, I’m in an empty gate because no one is here. Security check point took me all of ten minutes. I could have used the extra hour in bed, but I’m here, so I’m going to make a Steemit post.

A few months ago I did a blog titled “Aussie cowgirl living in LA!”. Today’s photography features new work with the same Australian babe, Janis McGavin. I mentioned in the previous post that Janis, in addition to her other talented, is a hilarious comedian. She does a comedy series titled “Don’t do it, Janis!” and just recently, I discovered a hilarious spot she had featured on Funny Or Die!

Janis does a lot of crazy things with her leisure time, one of which is skydiving. One of the concepts she came up with for this shoot was a WWII airborne theme. When you’ve been shooting as long as I have, you start looking forward to the concepts that come out of left field. I’d never done anything like this, and Janis pulled strings to get the outfit and parachute. She had some reference photos for inspiration and our biggest challenge was to try and fill the parachute on a surprisingly calm day. Eventually, a small breeze came and we were able to walk it back until it filled up. I jumped in to position taking photos as fast as my memory card could write data. Eventually, I wrapped her in a cocoon of the parachute and shot from inside. Such cool shots!

A second concept, thought of again, by Janis, was carrying a handful of black balloons. It was abstract idea and those lend themselves well to interesting editorial fashion photos. We had a beautiful gated community at our disposal to shoot, with a pool and copious amounts of big, exotic foliage. This part of the shoot really put Janis beauty on display. It was a pleasure working with such a multidimensional model and actress. Janis is some of the best people I’ve met in LA. Hoping to make time to see her on this trip.

Thanks for reading. I have 12 shoots in 10 days so there’s a lot of new Steemit content coming! For more photography, art, illustration and the stories behind the work, follow me here @kommienezuspadt!
