Gated community – How safe?

in #teammalaysia8 years ago (edited)

Due to the overwhelming increase in crime rate, residents are taking into their own hand on protecting their home by hiring security guards and setting up a gated community. Mainly to prevent non-residents entering the community freely.

But how safe is the gated community? Is it really that effective?

I am staying in a gated community, with five security guards working at any one time. Even then, there was a break-in in my neighbourhood area last week. Lucky no one was hurt.

Why is that still happening even in a gated area? Below are five very much working ways to get past the security guards in Malaysia gated community, without having to sneak in.

  • The Malaysian mighty ‘5’
When approaching the security guard, just raise one of your hand, show your five fingers. The next thing you know, the boom barrier is raised and you are in. This works most of the time in Malaysia.

  • All it takes is a fake or expired driving license from anonymous
Most of the security guard didn't check if it's a fake driving license. I can give them my wife's driving license and they let me in without a single question. It's not hard for a thief to have other people's driving license.

  • Bribe the security guard
Sometimes when facing a not-so-friendly guard, you need to bribe him, NOT by money, but something more 'Malaysian', all you need is to dabao a Teh Tarik (a pack of tea).

  • Go during midnight
Many of the security guards is having their sweet dream. Some of the gated community have their security guard patrol around the neighbourhood perhaps twice during midnight. They are easily spotted because usually, hey patrol with a very bright torchlight. It tells the thieves that the security guard is coming.

  • Forge a sticker
Stickers can be forge very easily. And the security guards doesn't really care if the sticker is real or fake. They only pay attention to the shape and colour of the sticker and they will let you in.

If we can get past the security guard so easily, what is stopping the thieves? Yes, gated, but still, criminals continue to happen. But the percentage of crime is much lower compared to non-gated. Gated can only provide some level of security, but can't totally prevent thieves.

One of the ways to solve this is to hire quality security guards, and replace stickers with access cards. To implement such change, it required the corporation of the entire neighbourhood to pay the monthly fee. In my community area, only 60% of the residents are paying for the monthly fee. I hope one day we can get 100% support from the community.

My friend’s business partner’s house was broke in before. They suspect it was the work of security guards or they are co-operating with the guards. Before the guys left, they passed this message - always leave your kitchen/back room lights on.

On another note, my husband asked me recently - how come most houses in the US runs on open concept when their crime rates are supposed to be higher than here? I have no idea

I think it has to do with the distance of suburbia (ungated houses) to the city.

Some house in Putrajaya also open concept. Guess security is tighter there since PM office is near.. haha

Yeah.. it could be work of security guards as well because the guards are normally very underpaid. If the community jointly paid the monthly fee, the security guard will get higher pay and hopefully they can protect us rather than co-operating with the thieves.

Hmm even though you wrote it in a witty way of how the thieves can get past the guards, this is certainly a concern. Yes I hope you can get 100% support from your community to get quality guards! In the meantime, you and your family be safe :)

we are puzzled why some people don't want to pay the fee. It's not that much, and they can afford it as well since they drive luxury cars.. Some are even Dato'...

Even those strata title owners who are legally obligated to pay the fees also don't pay, let alone those where the residents ownself setup the gate and hire the guards. Selfish nuts!

This is a good post and informative too!, but the #familyprotection tag isn't the place for this kind of article. The #familyprotection tag is for posts related to exposing CPS injustice and corrupt practices of removing children from loving homes or legal advice and sharing cps related experiences to create awareness.. If your post isn't related to this, please refrain from using the #familyprotection tag!. Please you can still change it now. Thanks for your understanding.

Thank you for the reminder. Removed.

Every system is vulnerable, a hacker will always find ways to exploit such vulnerability. Be it a wifi network, computer system... or even a gated community...

True also.. if they intended to do bad, doesn't matter what lies ahead, they will still find ways to do it..
