Through The Mountain We Go

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Driving from Johannesburg in the north of South Africa to George way south in the Western Cape Province you can't help but observing the great and vast landscape diversity as you drive through the different provinces. Four provinces to be exact!

From Johannesburg its about 12 hours drive and 1200 km stretch of road to get to George. First you drive through the densely populated Gauteng province with big industrial factories, shopping malls, plenty of houses and informal settlements before you cross the Vaal River into the Free State Province.

The Free State Province is right in the center of South Africa with unbelievably beautiful open spaces. Corn and cattle farming is present as far as the eye can see along the road until you reach the Orange River, witch not only is the largest river in South Africa but also makes for the border crossing into the Eastern Cape.

Entering into the Eastern Cape you drive through the area also known as the Karoo....I must be honest that the open spaces just got more vast. Driving through the karoo at night also makes for some of the most beautiful star gazing experiences ever. It truly feels like you can touch the stars..... and so I did. LOL!

We were already so much closer to our final destination when the sun came up to greet me with a smile and the anticipation of us reaching George grew so much stronger. Only 300 km to go.....

Oh yes! We were almost there.

So a different kind of beauty awaited us as we got closer to the Outeniqua mountain pass. The Outeniqua mountains split the dry and desert like karoo with the lush green forestry George and the garden route got to offer. It is really worth to stop at one of the many outlook points they got in the pass for a couple of photo's.
