The life of a newbie on steemit can sometimes be frustrating especially if you don't have a knowledgeable person in the field guiding you. That frustration you feel when you write a post you feel should get massive views and reactions and after 7 days you earn no reward. As a newbie I faced that frustration, I made some really nice posts and there was no reward for them, discouraged and heartbroken, I reported the happenings to my friend @xpressng and she enlightened me about using the right hashtags on my posts. Before then though I knew what hashtags were, just didn't know the peculiar ones to use on steemit.

Hashtag is the most abused tool on social media as a lot of people really don't know what they are and what purpose they serve, this abuse exists mostly on facebook, and is done by majority of Nigerians.

Maybe they feel it makes their posts stylish or gives some sort of swagger. I saw a facebook post a girl made and she used this funny, irrelevant hashtag
#mybooiscuterthanyours, #wahalaforwhonogetboo #smallgirlwithbigGod, I laughed and scrolled past the post.It is really sad to know that, a lot of social media users use hashtags without really knowing their purpose. Some of the persons I introduced to steemit frequently asked me this question,

what are tags?
what are the tags to use on my post?

I think these should be added to the FAQs (Frequently asked questions) on steemit if they are not already on it.

Before I begin to talk about the right hashtags to use on a post, I'd like to enlighten us on what hashtags are?

Hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#), used on social media websites and applications, especially Twitter, to identify messages on a specific topic.
This definition according to google is quite simple, if you still don't understand you can re-read it.

From the definition above you will find out that hashtags used on a post should be closely related to the topic or content of your post.
For example if you are a poet, it would do you no good using #photography or #fashion or #business or any other hashtags that comes to your mind. Hashtags should be used in relation to your post. So that when an enthusiast in the subject matter checks out the tag, your post could be viewed and if it's a really good content it can get a good upvote, a comment and even a resteem.

At this point I'm quite sure you must have gotten the idea about hashtags, if you still haven't you can take your time and gently read through the post.

As a Nigerian newbie, some good tags have already been put in place by some benevolent Nigerians who have taken it as a task upon them to support and encourage you by upvoting your posts.
some of those tags which I use a lot recently and have gotten decent rewards for my posts are

#stach: This hashtag as I heard is affiliated to a very magnanimous Nigerian @ejemai who wants to support the effort of Nigerians on steemit. Since I started using this tag, I have received upvotes from some whales such as @candyman and @mustard
Then there is the #untalented: This one I started using recently and my posts have been very decently rewarded by @surpassinggoogle who I think is the man behind this hashtag.
Furthermore there is
#genesis-project,
#project20millionnaija,
#nigeria
#africa etc..

These tags I have provided doesn't mean they are all you could/should use. There are several other tags on steemit and you could use and you can see them boldly on the screen if you are using a PC. However on a mobile phone you can view the existing tags by clicking a panel that says all tags.

Clicking on a tag shows several posts of people who have made an article relating to the tag.

So dear newbie, next time you make a post, learn to use the right tags.

For example if your post is a poem, use the hashtags #poetry as your major tag then subsequent tags could be #stach #untalented etc
Steemit has limited tags to a maximum of 5 and a minimum of 1, so use your tags wisely.

If after reading this you still don't understand, leave your complaint in the comment section and I'll gladly respond to you. As I'm still a newbie if there are other suggestions feel free to drop them in the comments section...

Happy Steeming!
