The Dragon in the Water

in #photofeed8 years ago

Dragons Head Rock on the Mornington Peninsula is accessible only at low tide. Even then the swell can be a little dangerous with waves billowing over the reef and sending water towards unwary photographers. A number of times I've gone from standing in water an inch deep to holding my camera and tripod in the air as a large amount of flooding water crashes into me above my knees.

Never turn your back on the ocean. Especially when standing on reefs and rocks.

You can turn your back on the ocean iff you make like you're driving and are checking behind every couple of seconds (except obviously in the case of being in the ocean you need to actually look over your shoulder due to lack of a rear view mirror XD)

But yes seriously good advice. The frequent checking is one of the first things you learn...well pretty much everywhere on Christmas Island, one current change and you can get dragged out from some of the beaches or knocked off a cliff you were standing too close to the edge of.

That rock does look rather draconian. Good thing it's just a rock, would hate that thing being mad at you. It is just a rock right? RIGHT?! ;D

goatsig

Instead of breathing fire it breathes water!

Another fine work of art brother!

Good advice, the ocean has a tendency to lull you into a false sense of security and then come out of nowhere to batter you when you let your guard down.

Wonderful photo, and I love the name of the rock. :D

I always watch rocks for a good 5min before moving closer to the edge. Especially if the rocks are already wet, chances are another wave will come by again. I've been drenched more times than I'd like, but there are some cases where keeping an eye on the waves has saved my gear and potentially my physical safety.

Yeah, same here, though I'm less experiences being beside the sea, and even more cautious - never really been drenched. Probably why I don't have many good oceanside photos! :p

I'm just lucky the Canon is weather sealed. It should have died long ago otherwise

That is a cool rock .

The photo is not too shabby as well ;-)

Lots of great rock formations along this coast. Add it to your list for when you return

Yes for sure ! Might be quicker to start listing the exclusions !

Don't bother going to Sydney...

Such a dope shot bro!

Thank you very much!

Another absolute beauty. I am loving the texture in the water that you captured.

Thanks a bunch!

Hey quick question - I've always heard shooting the extended iso's like 50 isn't a good idea - what are your thoughts image quality wise?

On the new Nikons shooting extended low is virtually the same as shooting at ISO 100. I'm sure every camera is different though!

Like everything, testing is the best options. Set conditions the same and shoot at ISO 50,100,200,400 and see if there is a noticeable difference. I wouldn't be able to tell much between 50 and 100, but definitely between 50 and 200 and 400. Some cameras/lenses handle diffraction differently too. I know some cameras where you wouldn't want to shoot above F11! But with the right sharpening I don't mind going to F22 now and again if the situation calls for it.

Nikon has been great with low noise. I shot Nikon for quite some time - but then jumped to Canon world because of video. Now Sony seems to be king of the hill.

meh. I haven't had any issues with image quality and I can double my shutter time because of it. Every camera would be different so I can really only speak for the mkiii but I doubt anyone would be able to pick that I've shot at ISO50 instead of ISO100.

I also use the 5d Mark iii (can't wait to get my hands on the iv). But the best thing I can do is give it a shot. It's just that I've been programed not to use the extended modes as it's always had a bad rap.

que hermoso lugar, hermosas rocas.

It's a very beautiful coastline :)

WOW. a dangerous attraction.
but it is extraordinary.

The rewards are worth the risk :)

Beautiful shot, love the foreground interest!
