For today's weed news we go to Washington DC.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson and Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz just introduced a new bill to Congress that would allow veterans access to medical cannabis once and for all.

The Veteran's Medical Marijuana Safe Harbor Act aims to let Veterans Affairs physicians write prescriptions for medical cannabis for patients suffering from PTSD and/or severe pain.

As it stands right now, "federal law prohibits VA doctors from prescribing and recommending medical marijuana to veterans... This legislation will allow veterans in Florida and elsewhere the same access to legitimately prescribed medication, just as any other patient in those 31 States who have (medical marijuana)," said Senator Bill Nelson.

Supporters of the bill as well as many legalization advocates are hoping that letting VA doctors write medical cannabis prescriptions will reduce the harmful effects of opioid painkillers that many vets take daily.

"States with medical marijuana laws have a 24.8% lower mean annual opioid overdose mortality rates compared with states without medical cannabis laws," read part of the proposed bill.

Apart from calling for access to MMJ for veterans, the bill also wants to set aside 15 million dollars for scientists to study how cannabis effects vets experiencing severe pain and how veteran use of medical cannabis is playing out in states where MMJ is available.

I can't understand how anybody serving in Congress could vote against this bill, but I'm sure dozens will.

Let's hope that dozens more vote for it.

Come on Congress, people are suffering God damnit!

Shoutouts to senator Bill Nelson and Senator Brian Schatz.

And that's what's up in Congress!

If it passes that is good but I still feel like the better solution would be to legalize it completely.

It also worries me when I hear that it is going to be studied for its effectiveness against pain. Depending on how they define "effective" they can spin the results to make cannabis seem less valuable than it is. In my use of it it, doesn't seem to kill pain in the way that an opioid would but it does make pain less bothersome. That effect would reduce the need for opioids but the people who are conducting the studies could say "cannabis isn't as good of a 'pain killer' as opioids" without mentioning that it is still very useful in pain management. I just read an article that did exactly that the other day.
