Accidentally Growing Avocados - Expanding my Scrap Garden Unexpectedly (+ Mulberry Cutting Update)

Growing an avocado from a seed has been a touchy subject for me because I’ve attempted to grow dozens over the years. I’ve religiously followed the tips and tricks revealed by gardeners online by poking the seed with three toothpicks and placing it in a bowl of water. Every single time it failed to sprout. Finally it got to the point where I was so frustrated, I simply tossed the next avocado pit into our compost pile.

Apparently that’s all I needed to do to convince the pit to sprout! I’m almost mad at how easy it was! As I turned the compost (much later), I saw a large pit roll down the mound of rotting fruits and dried grasses. When I picked it up to chuck it back, I saw a two inch long root reaching out to the nutritious compost. I flipped shit to be honest! I was so excited that I forgot to take a picture before I planted the little fellow in a pot if compost! There he lies sleeping under the soil and just waiting for the right moment to peak his leaves out to the sun! Cross fingers!

I’m so excited that my scrap garden is growing both in number of plants and physical plant growth. Take a look at my celery which I transplanted into a larger pot - he grew another 2 inches for a total of approx. 4 inches!

And while I checked on my scrap garden, I took a closer look at the mulberry cuttings I received from @papa-papper… do you see what I see?!

That’s right! A small speck of new, pale green growth! ALL FIVE cuttings are now showing signs of life! I’m so excited to see them grow and thrive - thank you again @papa-pepper!

I never put mine in the water and always start in soil in small pots inside the house. It will take a month or more to get them to pop, but I have 3 right now that are kicking butt and outside for the summer.

There are numerous plants that will readily root from cuttings. Tomatoes are wonderful for that and I've rooted squash runners by burying nodes. I want to try the pineapple top and see if I can get it to root. Celery and lettuces will root easily as long as the butt has a bit of stem and you keep the core. Can be nice to do if you find a specifically nice head of lettuce and want to keep it going.

Cutting the top of the pineapple off with a tiny bit (like a quarter of an inch thick) and then sticking the pineapple into the ground was a method that I saw successfully root pineapples in tropical environments with some organic matter buildup.

That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try growing more plants from cuttings in the future!

Nice work salvaging that sprouting avocado! I'll be keeping up with you and your garden now :) I have had a container garden of basils, kale, lettuce, and some allysum for pollinators, but I let the lettuce and basil flower so now it is just a pollinator garden!

Thank you and that's awesome, I love container gardens :)

Nice to see your mulberry cuttings about to start growing. All the best with the avocado, I had no idea about how tough it is to get them to sprout. Keep sharing, am following

Thank you! I appreciate the comment!

We've tried the avocado stones with the 3 cocktail sticks in water several times, and now we have just got one sprouting/rooting for the first time!

Here's hoping...

Best of luck! Like I said, that method has never worked for me but I've heard it works like a charm for others! I'll cross my fingers for you!

I wonder why it was so hard for you?? I've done many. I wonder if there's something in your water?!?!

Many of my family members have had trouble with this too but they live in different areas so I don't know if it is the water. My aunt said she finally tossed hers into a compost/ around her backyard and she had better luck with that method (granted she lives down south with a different climate)! I took a leaf out of her book I guess haha!
