Grip Training

in #fitness7 years ago

You're only as strong as your grip.

It's quite common these days for most people to completely overlook grip strength when it comes to training. I believe it can be very beneficial to overall strength and just grip training alone can increase overall strength in seemingly unrelated areas.

Some people like to use grippers which are good, I have some myself but the benefits gained from them is quite limited compared other forms of grip training so I rarely use them.

My favorite grip training methods mostly revolve around various forms of bar hangs, towel pullups and various forms of fat bar training.

I make almost all of my training tools myself, so I'll present them here with a brief description and how I use them.

These are two of my pullup bars, they have PVC sleeves that revolve when you grip them. I've never met anyone who can do 1 rep one on the fat bar whilst gripping the sleeves. I can do 3 or 4 reps depending on the day & other factors like if I've already trained that day etc.

These are my vertical pullup handles. I do regular pullups, front and back levers & skin the cats on the smaller diameter handles and just regular pullups on the fat grip (green) handles (3 rep max at the moment).

These ones are my wrist wrenches, these things take grip training to whole new level. When loaded they develop an enormous amount of torque and they want to roll themselves out of your grip, so they work the finger and thumb flexors very hard & also give you a wrist flexor workout par excellence. I attach Kettlebells to the plastic (white) ones with a chain and a small shackle and the longer bar is a pullup bar which I hang from a rig I also use for the fat bars and vertical pullup handles.

I can't do a full pullup on the wrist wrench bar, I can hang for a few seconds and do about 5 or 6 mixed grip pullups but a pullup while hanging from the difficult side on that thing is one of the most extreme lifts I've ever tried. All the wrist wrenches can be gripped in either of two ways, so they have an easy and a difficult option, I grip all mine in the most difficult grip

I'm currently doing progressions that someone learning pullups would use to attain their first regular pullup ie. Australian pullups and pullup negatives. I hope to achieve a full pullup on the wrist wrench bar some time this year. If I do I'll be sure to post a video as it will be a noteworthy occasion.
