3D printing moving parts
This is a multi part articulated assembly printed pre-assembled in one piece.
I'm posting this for teamaustralia member @gyro, we're collaborating on a few projects and he's on the road right now so I thought I'd use steemit to save time bouncing emails back and fourth while he has limited internet access.
One of the advantages of 3D printing is the possibility to manufacture parts that can't be made any other way, in this exercise I designed a two part assembly where the parts are permanently joined and the assembly has 360degrees of rotary motion.
It's a totally useless design that I made to figure out clearances and work out the appropriate tolerances for my printing setup. One half has a female dovetail set around a circular axis and the other part has the male dovetail that is printed in place so it becomes a captive assembly. The only way to get it apart would be to break it.
When it came off the printer it felt and looked like one solid piece but with a bit of persuasion the joints separated and the design worked exactly as planned. This is a very simple design but it represents a totally new paradigm and opens up a whole new world of possibilities that I couldn't have even imagined a few years ago. To have the capability to make things like this myself at home still seems like a small miracle to me.
@gyro was here when I was designing this so I thought he might like to see how it turned out.
& remember @gyro the difference between impossible and possible is just mindset!!
Awesome work mate I have been thinking for a few years now that 3d printing could be very helpful in old car restoration and just replacing parts in any vehicle that you can not find the parts for anymore. Glad @gyro is still about here as I have not seen much from him for quite awhile now. I miss the interactions we had on our car posts.

Yeah, they certainly are handy for making car parts, having the option to make something rather than having track it down is very empowering. My kids now have the idea that they can just conceive something and have it materialise that day. So many of my ideas have stopped in the past because I had no way to make the parts I needed, they don't have that limitation, so the sky's the limit.
& @gyro has had a really tough 2018 but he's come through it better than many lesser men would have fared if they were dealt the same hand. Hopefully we'll see more of him around here this year.
That's cool being able to make all sort's of useful things with the 3d printer. I had no idea why @gyro just seem to disappear from here I always hoped he was ok. Sounds like he has had a rough time lately:( I hope he is getting on top of whatever was the issue and wish him well and hope we see him around more this year:) Thanks mate

It was more of a clusterfuck than an issue @j85063 , it's not really my place to say what happened but he was royally screwed over by the commonwealth bank when he was already dealing with quite a few other issues at the same time.
To his credit though he didn't take on a "victim" attitude and just kept focused on solving his problems.
Cheers mate
All good mate I don't need to know just glad he is getting through the problems:) Sounds like he is dealing with it very well thanks for that mate. Banks eh :(
