Look here, Roger Ver. (My thoughts about the recent Epicenter interview)

in #bitcoin8 years ago (edited)

Spent an hour earlier listening to Bitcoin Jesus voicing his concerns over BTC's looming issues. Real genuine guy. Reflecting upon his talk, I can't help but think that Steem is what he's actually looking for. Here are some of the points that he brought up:-

  • There's censorship happening to dissenting ideas about Bitcoin on forums and a good number of crypto-news websites. Total support of free speech is preferable, and the platform should maintain itself as a free open network for all.

  • Roger Ver expressed his intention to spread Bitcoin's usage as wide and as quickly as possible in a race to get mainstream folks to experience Bitcoin's usefulness before losing them out to misinformation / smearing by governments or special-interest groups. He mentioned that it's happening in India, with certain groups telling the public that Bitcoin is being used by terrorists and the drug trade, without saying anything else about it.

  • He mentioned that he used to be able to tell people that transaction costs are basically negligible. But now it can range from 10 cents to 50 cents, even up to 10 dollars for a complicated transaction. With a worsening transaction experience, the network is losing its competitive advantage.

  • He wants Bitcoin transactions to be as fast, as safe, as cheap, and as reliable as possible, but that has been degraded over the past couple of years. Basically, scalability issues are turning out to be not so useful for businesses anymore.

Just give it a listen and think - isn't Steem what he's been looking for in a blockchain? Fast 3-seconds blocktime, uncensorable (so much that even any dissenting ideas of Steem itself is happening right on the blockchain!), and exactly zero transaction fees. Plus people just register, get a wallet, and have the means to earn possible rewards right away, even without being a miner. All while participating in a social network that gives it extra unique properties of a new kind of organization.

I wonder what are his thoughts about Steem. Is he still around? If you're reading this @rogerkver, I think Steem deserves a second or third look. There are plenty of misinformed folks spreading falsehoods about Steem so that might've coloured your perception. In any case, I think Steemit Inc should update that whitepaper link as soon as possible.

Great interview. If you're new to cryptocurrencies, I would suggest you to subscribe to Epicenter on Youtube!

Bitcoin will be replaced by something I call SuperBitcoin.

Bitcoin is great, it is the opening onto the world mind that there is an alternative. But, it is truly only in the geek phase. It has to become MUCH MORE user friendly.

Dash and other coins are making headway into getting things like smart contracts worked out. And this is great, but it still has a long way to go. And there are pieces that need to be added to crypto-currencies that are essential to their long life and stability, but they haven't emerged into mass consciousness yet.

And the biggest problem with Bitcoin, is that there isn't enough Bitcoin. Yes, Bitcoin is divisible enough to work for the world, but people's brains don't work that way. They ask, how many bitcoin do you have, and expect whole number 1, 2, 10. The numbers, if massively adopted would be 0.00000012 BTC which is not a human usable number.

The numbers, if massively adopted would be 0.00000012 BTC which is not a human usable number.

There was a proposal a while back to replace the human-visible unit to "bits" which would be equal to 100 satoshis (i.e. 1 satoshi = 0.01 bits). It never got much traction although some UIs still use mBTC (millibits; 0.001 BTC)

I dont think it's a problem since UIs would be ubiquitously equipped with some live fiat (or whatever largely relevant) currency converter?

I certainly don't agree with the claim this is "the biggest problem with Bitcoin". There are many reasonable solutions to it.

I'm still unable to find any way to properly evaluate other coins. Even Bitcoin proved difficult, but long term valuation is just a really rough approximation of how much capital is going to flow from fiat exchanges into crypto exchanges. About the not very user friendly BTC amounts and decimals - I think shouldn't be a problem since UIs would include live currency converters..

What if bitcoin could gain STEEM like features?

It's easier for steem to gain bitcoin price than for bitcoin to gain steem features.

i imagine Bitcoin will evolve in time to satisfy its market.

Not sure how that can happen, but I guess it can with just a simple hardfork..

Not sure there's any such thing as a simple hardfork for BTC. It's arguable that it's never happened.

Yup it is, but probably it'll happen quite easily if the proposal is good enough and necessary?

Perhaps. I just exhausted my knowledge of the BTC blockchain in my previous response. ;)

Saying the F word is frowned upon!

Never going to happen to the extant Bitcoin network. Do you mean something like having a Bitcoin derivative on the Steem network?

Is this possible? If so, that would spell trouble for steem, no?

Yes, No it could be great for Steem ;)

Haha oh! Do you mean because it would give it credibility?

Love the theme music to this, Epicentre need to get on Steem.

Yeah i totally feel like a crypto rebel listening to that. They're on Steemit.. at least one of them :)

Do you know their usernames?

Just traced my comments again, yup @crainbf is here :)
