I would have simply copied and pasted out  the article from google but since this articles are more complex so let me make easy for u'll.



Internet working process is divided into mainly three parts

1)Crawling

2)Indexing

3)Retrieval



We user actually are at retrival stage were we ask a question to search engine by using some keywords and instead it gives answer to our query.



But before this retrieval process there two processes occuring above it and that two process gives best possible results for search asked to do.

Now let's began...



1)First stage is a crawling stage (discovering new contents on internet stage).This is done by an automated bot (an alogorithm designed to search things automatically) named spider which keeps on working all time and collects information about each page ,links stored on it,keywords,title of it,images it has,relevance of it on net,it's ranking,etc are stored on page list that it makes side by side.The search engines algorithm knows what to collect from what pages and then it keeps on jumping from one page to another and then another one were the previous page is linked and does same stuff of gathering information.



Now billions of pages are being collected and stored on database of google that is what indexing all about.Indexing collecting all pages on database.



Retreival means giving answers to query asked.



Looks quite simple but now complexity starts.



Lets take an example an think how whole things work in real time.



Now suppose u search for an keyword What is age of amitabh bachann?



Now search engines crawlers have already got thousands of words,pages,files,links images were it states something or other about amitabh bachann by going from page to page,link to link process as explained above.



Now giving results part is very important as here the real testing of search engine occurs as from thousands and lakhs of result the search engine will now look for word we search into its pages i.e it will search that given word is in title,or has got some links to it on page or no. pages that are linked to given page ,relevance of page,how far page is getting updated etc about 200+ questions are asked and from that, the pages that satisfies it will be appeared on top and will be in decreasing order of priority as such Here certain algorithm are used by different search engine like google, bing, morzilla firefox,etc so that u get different results of same question on different search engines and finally u will get the age of amitabh bachann in wikipedia or any other relevant site.



Here also when an word is searced that has dual meaning like for eg u search" apple " then search engine for itself understanding that u are talking about eating apple or apple company also uses, cookies that tells weather what we are searching.If before u have searched for technology videos.macbook prices,iphone,etc then engine will definetly give apple company search results and if you have searched before some food items and about eatables u will get eating apple results.Also if search engine is confused it gives both result.



Also how in real time , when initially it started it used to search that how many times the given word appeared in the the given page and the more the no. of time it would come better its rank is,but this system can be easily bypassed so then it started searching for the pages that would have more no of links of the given searched page,but this too was easily bypassed.



Now more advanced technics are used more searching and giving priority to the content,this is done by machine learning or deep learning process and it becomes difficult to bypass it and thus it gives justice to all content.



Generally when u search the first result u see is the most viewed or frequently searched page of search engine if u search for a content like contains some information, wikipedia will be normally the first one as it is generally ranked first also when u search for suppose amazon prime first result will be the website which will lead you to the amazon prime where u can see videoa thus it's all dependent on usage of particular content and based on it ranks or priority is given.

In this way whole search engine works.
