Old floodgate
This old floodgate now abandoned, and no longer work. Last few years, spatial in Banda Aceh has changed. Many rice fields have become densely residential area. Floodgate, previously, was a support for the construction of irrigation dams and flood control dams. It is used to control the water flow in the river and the levee system.
River or a canal, where the floodgate is located, in fact, have a history, because it was a canal dug by the Sultan of Aceh in ancient times to drain water to various places, among others, to the sultan's palace area itself. The water in canal is tipped at a place where a spring in the foothills spurting; the name of that place is Mata Ie.
Apparently, the sultan also has a dam in a higher ground to accommodate water from the spring. Name of high ground it is Keutapang Two (the two trees Keutapang). Believed, in the same place, have repeatedly built the floodgates or sluice gates to control water levels and flow rates in the river and canal.
That was a type of manual floodgate that require manpower to manages the flow floodgate by closing and opening the doors of this floodgate. The type of floodgate is usually called the Bulkhead gates; vertical wall with a moving part or can not be moved. Moving parts can be lifted to let the water pass underneath.
However, today, floodgate had been left to rot, the iron rusted and rotted with age.And I recorded it by taking pictures, at least, one day, become a memory of a floodgate on a canal dug by the sultan of Aceh.
