WTH is this Prison ??

in #story7 years ago

Sometimes getting lock up in a prison is a five star experience , today i'm going to share with you guys about the joint, the pin, the clink, the slammer... Prison! Now when you typically think of prison you will think of a bad place, the place where you're confined in a small place, where if you roll of your bed your head will end up in a toilet bowl. Where you will eat food that you would never normally ordered, or if you accidentally ordered it you would just push it away from you cause just by looking at it would lose your appetite. Its also the place where you would spend lots of time with people who you afraid of, just when you're trying to relax, swooop there's a shank at your back.

Now all of the above is what i think of when someone mention prison but it turns out there were prison out there that were not so prison-est. So ladies and gentleman, allow me to take you on a tour to the lifestyle of the luxurious prisoners.

Halden Fengsel

Norway's Halden Fengsel is a maximum security prison that houses some of Norway most dangerous criminal, i'm talking about rapist, murderers, arsonist etc.. Its a 75 acre facility with the capacity of 250 prisoners with the staff count at roughly 300 people, now thats a lot of staff.

Norway social system has universal health care and free education so all of that applies to the people in the prison, so basically its pretty luxuries. One thing i learn is that the maximum sentence in Norway is 21 years, and then there is a stipulation that could extend it but that is the maximum sentence for a murderer.

Everything is the prison is built no to be punitive but to be restorative, to reintroduce a person to society. So if you walk around this place, they set up this place like a village, like a life outside prison. There is trees everywhere so they can experience all of the season that people on the outside experienced.

There is home school, workplace and gym areas to simulate a normal routine. Now how about their cell? a 110 square foot cell offer you a private toilet and a private shower, now let me point it out that having a private shower in a prison is a pretty big deal because when you had one and you drop your soap you could just pick it up ;). Continue with list, the cell also have a mini fridge, unbarred windows also known as, normal windows, and a flat screen television in your room.

It kinda look like a private hospital room if you ask me, you can also stroll down to the prison supermarket where you could buy stuff once a week, so how did they buy stuff you asked? Because they got paid! You could just go out of your room to work and earn money for around 53 krone a day ( 25MYR / 7USD). From there you could just buy stuff and bring it to the communal kitchen where you and your cronies could make meals together with all type of utensil, including unrestricted access to KNIVES !! So you want to fashion a coat hanger into a shank ? are you stupid ? just take one from the kitchen drawer.

Tired of working and you want to do other activities ? There is rock climbing and volleyball court in the facility, there is even a recording studio where you could record you song, now i know what Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock refer to. So have you ever wondered what its like to live like a rich luxuries person, if you ever want to experience living as one its easy, you should only need to kill a person, but you need to go to Norway first thou then do the killing.

Now imagine living there, sitting in your private room watching your big flat screen TV while eating ice cream that you just bought from the store after you pick up your soap that you drop in the shower.
