Should Steemit Hide the Pending Payout on Posts Until AFTER a User Votes?

in #steem5 years ago

Whats up guys,

I am happy to start making these short blog posts again.

I was thinking about the whole conundrum steemit inc put forth regarding a separate downvote pool and it got me thinking about engagement on this platform.

Do you think the pending payout plays a negative role in engagement? When you see a low paying post, are you less likely to engage with it or take it seriously? I think its part of human nature to assume that something worth more money is more valuable than something that isnt.

I am considering whether it would be best for interfaces to hide the pending payout so that people arent disillusioned by the number. The posts can still display the upvotes and downvotes and the payout would only be displayed after that user has voted on it.

Thoughts?

No I don't think it should be hidden.

Well, i guess that settles it. 😑

Not really it's just my opinion.

Thank you so much for participating in the Partiko Delegation Plan Round 1! We really appreciate your support! As part of the delegation benefits, we just gave you a 3.00% upvote! Together, let’s change the world!

I tend to do the opposite. Highly paid posts have already been curated to death. Low paid posts, if they are good, need a little extra help.

Thats the thing though. By saying they “need extra help” you are are interacting with that post out of pity, as if you feel bad for it.

At the same time, you are disregarding higher paid posts because they are paid highly. People should read and engage with what they like instead of being biased like that.

Not pity. Undervalued. Like fundamental analysis with stocks.

This is content were talking about; something people do for pleasure and entertainment. Thats like going to youtube and watching videos with low views to try and “help them out.”

No. There is that part that says “if they are good”. The post has to be good. I don’t just vote all willy nilly.

If it’s a bad post, I don’t reward it. This isn’t a charity.

Posts with 100 upvotes aren’t going to change much with my vote. My share of the reward will be minuscule.

A vote for an excellent post by someone who doesn’t have a ton of followers means I get a bigger portion of the curation reward.

Thus, undervalued. It isn’t that the post was no good. Rather, they don’t have enough followers who can upvote their work significantly.

There is payout and there is engagement. Votes arent really part of engagement. Id say comments are the most important. When people see low post payouts, they are less likely to consume that content in my experience. Their attraction to content is biased due to the payout.

You arent making logical sense when it comes to consuming content. You are treating reading and upvoting like a business.

I’m helping undervalued content that would have been skipped by the bias toward high payouts. Not crap content. Good content that gets ignored. It helps others and also rewards me for . . . curation. I’m doing what we should be doing.

You are helping in terms of the persons monetary reward but displaying the payout makes people less inclined to value undervalued posts in terms of payout. This is human psychology. People will perceive highest payouts with more valuable and more worth reading and commenting. Your upvote doesnt address that. People will see a $0.10 post and skip over it because it is only valued at $0.10

Stop looking at it in terms of money. See it in terms of what content people will actually spend time consuming and commenting on. Hiding the payout (but still displaying the number of upvotes/downvotes) will psychologically affect people.
