Maiden's Tower is the most romantic symbol of İstanbul. It's called Kız kulesi in Turkish. The Maiden's Tower is located around 200 meters of the shore Salacak district in Üsküdar, in Asian side of İstanbul. One of the most iconic images of Istanbul surely has to be the Maiden's Tower.

What is the history of Maiden’s Tower Istanbul?

The maiden’s Tower whose history dates back to the 4th century BC constitutes an important part of the sillhouette of İstanbul. When it became necessary to lighten small rock at the entrance of the Bosporus a tower and lighthouse was built here. Althouht it was also used for other purposes, the tower had always been used as a lighthouse. Today, Maiden's Tower is a very popular and classy restaurant and cafeteria-bar. It offers 360 degree views of the Bosphorus and the old city.

Maiden's Tower legend

There are some legends about Maiden's Tower, the most famous one is princess legend. The Byzantine Emperor heard a prophecy telling him that his beloved daughter would die at the age of 18 by a snake. Thereupon, the King has a castle built in the sea in order to protect his daughter. Time passes and the girl grows up in the castle. However, she didn't escape from her destiny after all. A snake hidden in a fruit basket brought from the city bite the princess and killed her.
