The Sumela Monastery
The Sumela Monastery is one of the oldest and most historic monasteries in the Christian world. It was built into a rocky faced cliff in Trabzon in Turkey where northern part of Turkey. Legend says that the monks who founded the monastery in 386 AD did so after finding a mysterious symbol of the Virgin Mary one of the site's caves. Visitors ascent a staircase to arrive at the entrance and the inner courtyard and sacred cave. Inside the monastery are several noteworthy places including a library, a rock church and a spring venerated by the Greek Orthodox religion. The monastery has seen many empires and thus experienced numerous periods of neglect and restoration. As visitors navigate through the monastery buildings they will no doubt experience the overpowering sacred calm of the site.

It's not just the monastery itself that is the attraction, it's the entire expedition to see it: the monastery's alpine setting, clinging to a sheer rock cliff in the midst of dense evergreen forests loud with the splash of chill mountain streams.
