Some stats about stray dogs

in #dogs3 years ago

The amount of stray dogs in the world is unknown of course, but it is a lot. Millions upon millions of stray dogs exist worldwide and most countries wouldn't be capable or willing of getting this information anyway. I'm gonna do my best to give you some pretty harrowing stats about homeless dogs anyway, maybe to scare you into doing something :)

90% of dogs that are born will never find a permanent home.

This doesn't necessarily mean that they are born wild and stay wild their entire lives but in many cases they are abandoned or the family or individual involved wasn't really prepared for the difficulties associated with owning a dog. Many dogs actually do spend their entire lives living in the wild although at least in western countries like the USA these animals are normally eliminated because they are considered a nuisance. When i dug into this information a bit further it turns out that they are cheating a bit on these statistics to include people who have ever passed their dog off to a friend of family member for various reasons. Even though they are stacking the numbers here, it is still true that most dogs never find a permanent home.

In the United States alone, an estimated 2.7 million dogs are euthanized in shelters across the country. The killing of domestic pets is for the most part banned in the USA but that is not the case in most countries. In Thailand, if an animal becomes a nuisance it will generally be poisoned, which is a terrible way to go.

Going back to the United States (because they publish their results and are generally considered to be reliably accurate) around 80% of the dogs that enter shelters are considered "adoption-worthy" meaning that they do not have some sort of psychological or physical problem what would make them dangerous and unreasonably difficult to raise.

Here is a stat for all the people out there that want "designer dogs":

Around 25% of all dogs in shelters are purebred dogs

There you go, there is literally no reason to shop for dogs that you have to pay for. At least in the United States these shelters also keep a somewhat centralized database so if you have a specific kind of purebred dog that you are looking for, they can find it for you. The cost of shipping said animal will almost certainly be less that the purchase of a "brand new" purebred dog and you get to live better knowing you saved a life. Plus you won't be contributing to the "puppy factory" problem that exists around the world.

So if you are looking to get a dog or cat please please please at least check with your local shelter or animal rescue center before shopping for a pet. These places are overflowing with dogs in desperate need of a home and the organizations exist around the world almost without exceptions.
