New sterilization project.... with teammates!

in #animals3 years ago

One of the toughest parts of our operation here in Krabi is that sometimes we get the feeling that we are alone in this venture. Yeah, we have a great partner with the largest veterinary clinic in town - which we greatly appreciate and probably couldn't operate without - but for the most part this is a very one-sided thing and the government, despite constant appeals on our part, plays no part in assisting us in our venture to benefit the entire community and even the province.

Lately, we had a cooperative sterilization event a little ways out of Krabitown in an area called Nuea Klong with Lanta Animal Welfare. It was merely day one of a long-term joint effort but so far it has been a massive success!

We do this with a "mobile clinic" and actually bring the veterinarians with us who perform the surgeries on site and this saves a lot of time especially in these more remote areas. It is also a lot easier to find the problematic dog packs and get straight down to business as far as helping their populations are concerned.

With the assistance of the locals as well we were able to identify the "at risk" females and because the animals are more familiar with the locals the dogs were much easier to get crated and transported for surgery. Nuea Klong, just like any other part of Krabi as well as the rest of Thailand, is absolutely overflowing with stray and unhealthy dogs. We were able to sterilize and vaccinate dozens of dogs in just ONE DAY!

For those that don't know, a sterilization surgery is actually a very simplistic one for vets, and they were able to perform this on site in a very quick amount of time. It is always impressive to me when I see the skill of these professionals in person. Doing some quick math here, by the sterilizing of just 12 female dogs we are able to prevent at least 50 additional cases of homeless animals as well as their inevitable suffering and hunger.

This is and always has been our primary focus and it was just so great to see that the teamwork went as well as it did.

We were also able to spot check all the local dogs, male and female for all-too-common skin problems and treat them as well. Vaccinations were given to any dogs that were old enough to receive them. This was all done at cost by the medical professionals who were happy to participate and volunteered their time and expertise.

It is moments like these that make me feel that my feeling of "being alone" in this fight isn't actually true. There are a lot of people out there that care about this cause, we just needed to work harder on finding them and organizing the event. We are forever grateful to these kind humans who are willing to take time out of their lives in order to benefit the animal population of Krabi.

We will carry on with this mobile clinic for a few more days and by the time we are finished hopefully we will have established a reputation of reliability and trust with the local community and also perhaps make an impression with Neua Klong that there actually are organizations out there that can and will help with this problem. Often, people in smaller villages take matters into their own hands with stray animals and this can result in the very cruel process of poisoning problematic street animals that are simply trying to survive.

This was a great day to be involved in the animal-welfare industry because it proved to me that basically everyone out there does in fact care about the situation, they just were unaware that there was someone to turn to. Moving forward, we have high hopes that we can form a lasting relationship with this area and continue down our path of improving the overall lives of the stray animal population in Krabi province and beyond.

The government must issue a decision about the collection of different types of dogs each region in order to facilitate the process of examination. Yes, it is a great effort, my friend
