How Much TV Do We ACTUALLY Watch?
Not surprisingly, Netflix has become mega popular!
With an inexpensive month-to-month charge you can get all type of documentaries, Films and TELEVISION programs. They even have exclusive shows like .. Orange is the new black.
The typical American spends 4 1/2 hours of their day watching TV EVERYDAY!
That's 31 hours a week, Equivalent to a full-time job!
Why do we spend so much time watching Tv when there are millions of other things we could be doing?

How much Tv are you watching each week? Try adding it up! The results could be shocking.
Personally I'm a sucker for shows like
- Big brother
- Hells Kitchen and Masterchef
But I don't allow myself to watch Masterchef anymore, I only allow myself 3-5 hours of TV per WEEK, So I must pick wisely. Then when I'm sick I'll allow myself a bit extra for documentaries. So I'm not too concerned about my consumption. But I'm amazed by how obsessed other people are about tv!
Why do we prefer TV over movies?
- The length of a movie: 1-3 hours.
- Length of a TV shows 22 or 44 minutes,
It's less risky time wise to sit down and enjoy a tv show; We aren't committing an hour or two to anything. But instead, we are committing short increments of time. This is why people would rather watch a tv show.
Why Netflix?
Personally I"ve had my share of binge watching on there, but I'm finding more and more low quality junk, that I"m not really interested on there.
Why do other people love Netflix so much?
Netflix has imitated everything we love about TV with more convenience.
- Lots of "channels."
- Huge variety
Netflix also managed to give us other better benefits - No commercials
- Exclusive shows
- Ability to pause and rewatch whatever we want as many times as we want.
- Lots of movies, and TV shows.
Should we cut back on our Tv Consumption?
It makes us feel insufficient!
We can watch pirates fight, Then watch what it would be like to be a wizard at Hogwarts! We can see people travel the world, Fly without a plane. and explore space.
Why would we go back to our regular lives?
It can make us feel empty. We can't have lives like that no matter how we try. Life seems dry and boring, and worthless. I don't watch a lot of TV and I feel like I'm much happier overall than other people, could this be part of the reason?
TV Is expensive
Sure going on a vacation to California will cost you more, But TV adds up, It requires electricity. The bigger the screen, the more electricity you are using!
You may pay for cable packages. As well as Netflix, or Hulu.
It takes up a lot of Time
Many people watch 4.5 Hours a day! Imagine what you could do with that time?
Well, you could write 1-2 extra Steemit articles every day, Go to the park, Go for a long bike ride.
Hang out with friends! There are so many things you can do, Watching TV isn't living, you are just staring blankly at a lit screen.

Raised Expectations!
Not only do we feel empty because we can't be the next Harry Potter, But it gives us unrealistic expectations with everything else.
We can't have the perfect relationship, We can't be famous and have all the money. Sure it's somewhat possible. But not to the degree we see in the movies and tv shows we watch, And not as effortlessly either. It takes a ridiculous amount of work, and we often don't see that work in the shows we watch. It also may give us the expectations of certain appearances and beauty standards, When in reality they probably do a lot of editing and what you are seeing isn't' realistic.

Conclusion
We need to run and hide from the TV because it's deadly. Why are we wasting 4.5 hours of our day staring at the screen?
I'm sick of people complaining that they are "stuck" at a job they hate, Or they wish they could make more money, Especially if they are one of the people consuming so much tv time. If this is you, you have a FULL-TIME job worth of time every week that you are using on TV you could use that time better and get more done in your life!
Lets use our time more wisely people!

Cable tv is dead for me but Netflix and chill never, because things happen during Netflix and Chill good things.
But leaving this joke aside TV is evolving or better like is forced to evolve.
Statistic shows us that cable tv has decreased in subscriptions and that actually people are closing their subscription.
Not even to tell you how much the advertising was made for Netflix:
I mean my favorite shows are there :
And many many others...
So cable tv has no chance!
And yes I agree with you @kaylinart on the matter that we should cut on watching tv.
Since Netflix I dont watch anymore normal tv ( cable, antenna ) and olso I just watch my shows and thats it.
So if I calculate it will be less hours for me by watching Netflix.
Olso somethimes is just fun to chill with one special person and watching Netflix.
But in the same time I understand your point @kaylinart.
We spend precious time from our life in front of the screen...
I mean what will happen if the Apocalipse comes now and destroys all tech that we have ...and suddenly no more tv...
After that for sure we will see: people comming out from their homes like zombies...trying to search for food and staring at the grass ..because no more TV.
And of course then the mass histeria comes in to play because people get desperate.
So in conclusion my opinion is that tv is just another form of control that is good for us to be a race of mellow consumers.
But...maybe that's just me...
I agree Cable TV won't last, I agree that sometimes watching tv is fun and a good thing! I do that still. But I do feel that watching a full time job amount is really pushing it.
totally agree.
Thanks :)
Absolutely not a fan of prolonged TV use. I watch about an hour or two a day Maximum. Mainly our favourite shows! Game of Thrones, Prison Break, Dexter et al :)
The computer on the other hand.. well, let's just pretend I didn't mention that lol.
I don't have TV at my home since 2006 year.... Ohh ... 10 years..Just now I have got that have a kind of jubelee))) IThat means I havn't allowed it to steal my life for already 10 years) Thank you for your article @kaylinart that supports my idea.
Wow that is amazing! I don't know if I could cut TV out of my life all together. But cutting back is also nice.
i hardly watch tv...
Thats good ;) Keep it up!
in my life it has been a lot ~ I try to just watch educational shows now whenever I can/something I can learn something from or take away from. Great post! upvoted~
Thats good :) I love educational stuff so you can learn new things.
I would watch at least 6 hrs a day. But since I started trading Crypto I couldn't care less whats on tv. Now I watch Charts and prices. So much so I had to buy a chromebook just so that I can be mobile and be able to leave the house. I dont know whats worse. At least Im getting paid lol.....
I'm the same way!! Except with my coloring book stuff! I think once you find something besides tv that you can be crazy passionate about you forget Tv
There used to things called " drive in movie parks "; people allegedly would get into a car at night and drive to a large allotment and watch a huge screen movie as entertainment, truth !
Then large rectangular plastic tapes that went into machines to record or play whatever was on the film. Today people just want to chill out and watch something mindless.
I think the most popular is reality television even things like masterchef have some sort of challenge and risk involved, even the craziness of big brother allows people to mindlessly spend time not have to actively thin.
People awake follow a demanding timeline all day from showering, if your not on your way by 7.50 Am or whatever time then you know you will hit grid lock.
Once that day is over they mentally switch the clock off and just chill until they need to restart the prayers to the time gods.
I myself just use the television as a projector to display images of my computer or direct viewing account. In reality programming on free-to-air television has been made so terrible simple to sell more cable subscriptions : )
/ hugz ; )
WOw! I know about those. LoL they are so strange.
Yes I believe they are from the millennium . . .
Like another ancient age : )
/ hugz ; )
Great post. I agree with most of what kalinart has to say. One point that I would like to make is that I wonder how much is designed to dumb us down?
dubloon135
Agreed! I hear they dumb down things a lot. Its disappointing.
