SO MUCH COMPETITION On Amazon! Like how do you even get through!?
With Amazon being the biggest marketplace in the world. You can have a massive amount of sales If you know how to get your foot in the door.
And you can do that, by picking the right Niche.

What the hell is a "Niche" ?

It's like a category, A topic, A type of product you go into.
A small specialized group of people that you cater to.

What are the benefits of focusing on one niche?

  • Smaller amounts of competition.
  • You can focus on your smaller group of people who are your customers.

How To Find Your Amazon Niche

I'm not going to talk about the broader spectrum of niches, For example if you wanted to write a blog that would rank on Google. Because I'm not good at that one.
I feel like I've had much success with my Amazon niche marketing instead.

Decide A Type Of Product You Want To Sell

What kinds of things are you selling, Now don't make my mistake and say "My Niche is coloring books." No that's your medium! That's your product type.
So start with what you want to sell.
Makeup brushes? Books? Pants?

Once you know what you want to sell, You obviously have to get all that set up with your supplier. This post isn't about that. So I'll move to the next tip.

Whats Trending?

While I discourage you from basing your entire Amazon business around Trends, Trends can be helpful because they get your head in the right direction. You can start from trends then move outward. It can be a nice way to make "quick" Cash. Especially as a baby business, While your more flexible.

It's important to understand what BSR on Amazon is. So if you don't know about that yet, Look it up!
You can easily install an Extension on your web browser that will tell you the BSR On the outsides of listings. This is especially helpful when researching.
I highly recommend "DS AMAZON Quick view."
now your ready to get going....

Checking BSR's (Best seller ranking )

Alright, you want to make a bunny hat for example...
So what I USED to love about Amazon, is that if you typed in a keyword, They would show the TOTAL results for the product. That would give you A HUGE ADVANTAGE. When picking your niche. But for some reason, they don't have that anymore. Although you can still scroll down and see approximately how many pages there are of that particular product.

Don't make the mistake I did. I would decide I'm going to an "animal coloring book" I then would take weeks or months to make it. It turns out it was a "niche" That was already saturated. As a result, I would get almost no sales.
Instead, try to gauge your ability to sell BEFORE You make the product. That's why picking a "niche" is important.

Bunny Hats!

I'm just going along with this randomly here.
So I typed in a bunny hat, into the Amazon search bar.
I got seven pages of bunny hats.
Heres one ranking at 22,500 Which is pretty good. That means it's selling quite a bit a day.
If you watch the TV Show BOBs Burgers, You will see that this is a rip off of the characters hat.
See the link here
Heres the character....

So, of course, it's selling... It may or may not be officially licensed. But that will not only appeal to bunny fans But anyone who likes the TV show Bobs Burgers.
If you scroll down and look at the other hats, It appears that some are selling, But others are not.
This could mean that maybe people aren't as interested. And the ones that are selling Are being heavily marketed.
The hat on the top left appears be selling. But it looks familiar. Maybe it's from Alice and wonderland?

Hands down though, bunny hats may not be the way to go!
With a niche, you want to drill it down to a more particular group. And that group has to be BUYING. Otherwise, your hat will rot, and no one will buy it.

So.. I Typed in "Blue Bunny Hat."
Only 48 results. You could dominate this market if you wanted. But something to keep in mind though, Is a blue bunny hat probably isn't what they call an "Evergreen" Niche. Which means it sells year round all the time. A Blue Bunny hat will probably get most of it's sales during Easter.

What you should look for

When you pick your niche, you need

  • Less competition! Preferably under 100 search results. Although depending on your Medium, you may need more or less. With My coloring books, I am for under 2,000 in the search results.

  • A good BSR for those that are selling.
This again, Is subjective based on your medium.
For Books, I tend to look for under 20,000
While Shirts I am for under 300,000

What if the niche I want is saturated

Lots of niches are. That's why you need to get creative.
Like if you want to do cats.
Maybe you can do Coffee and cats,
Or Coffee, Cats, and Bread.
That would obviously only appeal to people who love those three things. But if you can find a group of people who like that stuff, You'll have a great niche. You can also use Facebook groups geared towards cat lovers and find out some of their other hobbies, Favorite colors, etc. To niche down to a smaller, But effective market.
Be prepared to possibly spend hours on this with trial and error. Picking the right niche can help you make thousands easily. While picking the wrong one, Can cause you to lose money.

Thank you @elyaque for the awesome Badges!

It's definitely easier (and more profitable) to pick a small niche and become super good at it... with some effort, you can become a "category killer" in some very narrow topic. One of the benefits (I have found) is that it's not worthwhile for large merchants to become deeply specialized... so individual sellers can rule niches; we should let WalMart be WalMart ("general" merchants) because they are already far better at that than we can ever hope to be! Good post!

Wow Love this comments! It's so true! Walmart would suck if they dominated the tiny niches haha

@kaylinart
I'm still trying to find my way around amazon. But thank you for sharing some helpful tips that we can apply and hopefully benefit from as we try to find our niche on there.

Thank you :) Let me know if you need help with anything else.

Very interesting. I have never sold on Amazon, nor have I even thought about it... but after reading this I think I need to look into it! There is a lot of money to be made on the internet!

You should! There are tons of people making six figures on amazon! I'm not one of them... Yet! But I hope to be one day.
