How I ACTUALLY Finish What I Start

in #steemit10 years ago (edited)

Most people say they are going to do this, and that. Well hours later... What was accomplished?
NOTHING!
They have a million good ideas, but none of them are ever accomplished.
They never get what they want in life, And they can't figure out why.
I had this problem too. Until I became more organized, I cleaned my room. I reorganized everything! I made things highly efficient making the hardest of tasks easy, and fast to do.

I tend to start too many projects, so I started focusing on each one individually.
I've mentioned this before previously, But I'm mentioning it again.

USE THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE

It sounds stupid, set a timer for 20 minutes and get started, How the hell will that work? How will you accomplish anything this way?
It surprisingly works. I have ADHD, and I can't focus on anything for very long, But this keeps me going, I bought a cheap 5.00 timer off of eBay. I set it for the 20 minutes and ZOOM!! I'm working like wildfire. I like the small clicking noise it makes; It helps me focus. I have a timer going right now, As I write this article.

Write Down What You Intend To Do

Your brain works in a funny way when it comes to setting priorities. It will always work on things that it seems to be most important. Unknowingly to you, your brain prioritizes things without consulting you. For instance, have you ever planned to do something but got hijacked by a TV show or the Internet before you even got started? If you have, here’s how to avoid that from happening again.

Write down your plan, in great detail. By writing down what you intend to do, you give your brain a visual picture. The brain then starts making plans on how to get the task done, even without you realizing it. Every time you look at the piece of paper detailing your plan, your brain calls on every resource to get the task complete. Try buying a planner and keeping track of the baby steps that you've accomplished. Having a list of baby steps will simplify your project and make it less painful to do.

Avoid Distractions

By now you know what hinders you from doing the things you want, right? You know your Kryptonite, and if you don’t want it to get in your way, you have to avoid it. For most people, the TV, the internet, video games, and shopping are the greatest detractors.

The good thing is, you can easily avoid these detractors. If you have a report from work you need to do, and you are a sucker for YouTube? Why not disconnect your computer from the WiFi and concentrate on the story?
If your greatest detractor is shopping? Why not avoid the mall and focus on the thing you need to do? By avoiding your Distractions, you increase your chances of seeing your projects through to maturity.
The good thing is, when you learn how to avoid these detractors, they stop becoming distractors. In fact, after avoiding them for a period, you find them less appealing, and you get a more done.

But to see your projects through, you need self-discipline. With self-discipline, you will complete everything you set out to do.

Try the website called www.Rescuetime.com It would tell you what you do on your computer for how long every day, They will send you a weekly email. The basic plan is FREE, But if you want more advanced features, Such as the ability to block certain sites at certain times of the day, Such as Facebook. You can. Although that's part of their paid plan. But they offer a lot of free features too!

I also stop watching TV. Ever since I started bringing revenue from books, the TV watching went WAY down and the writing went way up.

Neil Gaiman, the writer, says that you must finish what you start. That's the other thing. I think people don't finish because they're afraid to release it into the world.

Finish it and move onto the next thing.

So true!!!
Writing is so much better.
OMG I love that from Neil Gaiman. It makes so much sense. I noticed I"m more reluctant to post the more personal articles, Probably because I'm scared of what people will think.

You have to finish what you start, I was wondering where I've read that, luckily my memory still works :)

Also a great analysis of Gaiman's style if you guys are interested :)

This is great :) I love this art, Its fantastic!
It reminds me of my nightmares.

This is so fascinating.

Once you clean your room the rest is easy, lol. For me it was cleaning my office, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders

Its true! Cleaning sucks sometimes though, Or the re organizing part lOL

not if you play 80's music,
thats the trick

I am terrible for starting a task then not finishing it, I have so many things ongoing that it muddles my brain. I have a daughter who has ADHD I will pass this advice onto her thank you

I hope it will help her! I Feel like a lot of people struggle with this kind of thing, We have so many great ideas and we can't accomplish all of them at once, It's kind of hard.

It is and the more you have going on the more you put then off. You have to think about them individually get one out the way then start on the next. Its getting the motivation first though

Exactly! Maybe jot down the ideas real quick, then focus on one at a time!

I am going to give it a go. My head always feels better when everything is done, my brain feels clearer if that makes sense

A clean room goes a long fucking way in making me more productive. :)

SO TRUE! And organizing to make things easier to get to! I think I need to get rid of more junk lol.

you are supposed to be the friend and cant even start to help her, get your act together please

you could make money off that "I Cleaned My Room Look..."
just saying... :) xo

@kaylinart may this truth finally set me free! I am the biggest procrastinator so this article really hits home for me wow.

Hehe I"m glad :) Maybe it can help you improve so you can get more done.

Absolutely. I've eliminated so many distractions a long time ago TV being the biggest one, haha

Tv is awful! I don't watch much Tv either, But there is one show that is on during the summer that I splurge 2 hours a week on hahah. But thats pretty much it. Writing is so much better! hehe.

It's never the first 20 minutes with me.... it's the last 10%.

Wow I didn't think people were like that XD

Thank you very much!

I love it when people find the motivation they need to finish something, from within themselves. Do what you want, and do it well......

heheh Yes!! We need to motivate more and more people!

@karenb54
