How does Sodium affect the body
Sodium is an essential nutrient that also can ruin our bodies.
Table salt or common salt is the major supplier of sodium to our body followed by other foods. Many people get the math wrong here, where some extra sodium is added on to your diet apart from the table salt used, which could trigger various health issues. But in check, sodium is one most vital and key element that is required by the body.
Sodium inside your body
The main function of Sodium is to keep the fluid balance of the body. It is being regulated by the kidneys, where sodium actively takes parts in filtration, absorption and osmosis processes. Apart from that, Sodium plays their role in regulating nerve impulse and also muscle activities.

Numbers
According to safe standards by National Heart Lung and Blood Association, on an average, a person needs a minimum of 500 mg Sodium per day. Anything below would mess the functioning of kidney. Thought the higher limit is subjected to various physical factors, an average person should limit the sodium intake to 2300 ~2500 mg/day. Anything higher than this would affect the daily metabolism. According to current statistics, an average American consumes nearly 3500mg of sodium per day, which one reason for increased blood pressure and heart disorders.
The Effects of Sodium on the body
Directly imparting, excess sodium increases blood pressure. When the blood has more than enough Sodium, it draws more water on to blood stream, thereby increasing the blood volume in the body. With increased volume, blood vessels find it difficult to safely accommodate the flow, thus remediate by increasing the blood pressure.
Sounds simple, but guess if those vessels are clogged with some cholesterol. So mainly this is the reason behind increased heart attacks and your answer to the relation between ‘Sodium and cholesterol’!
Some other outcomes are:

Increased chance for a stroke:
Increased blood pressure could have an indirect effect on increasing the risk for a stroke along with a heart attack.
The body demands more salt:
Once the body get used to with the higher amount of salt, it demands more salt on the go.
Cognitive Impairment:
In the modern sedentary lifestyle, increased blood pressure has an impact on the thinking ability of a person. Over time, increased blood pressure would deteriorate the cognitive ability.
So, let’s don’t take the risk rather stay healthy! Say bye bye to extra salt.

Himalayan salt is the healthiest (the pink salt), I always use this one because it is pure and also contains more minerals. I try to keep the intake as low as possible. Upvoted!
i have come across some interesting research from the gerson institute which warned it's own patients against taking salt/overloading their diets with salt... interesting post here! upvoted!

I try to stay away from salty food. It's hard but as long as your exercise eat healthy, one salty treat a month should be ok.
Exactly! You should be able to eat junk once in a while!!!
It;s crazy how much sodium is in the everyday food available to us. My friend has high blood pressure and there is so much she cannot eat because of the sodium content. You don't realize how bad it is until you really look...most cans of soup have 1,100 mg. Wow.
Just finished off 13 days ritual due to the death of my father. One of the stipulations was no salt in these 13 days. A customary thing in our culture but the first time I went through. I must say I was "fit as a fiddle" and felt good and light through those days.
But on having salt again after that, I could feel the difference. I felt lethargic, heavy and sleepy, and I got the impression salt was not good for me. Relieved to read this post!
