"Unknown Soldier" - a song written by my mom, sung by me

in #appreciator4 years ago

My mother wrote this song on the occasion of the opening of the Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, 20 years ago today, May 28th, 2020. I've always wanted to sing it, and as part of the series seemed like the right occasion.

It's hard for most of us who have never thought about it for ourselves to get inside what it means for someone to sign up to serve in the military, knowing that it may truly mean the sacrificing of their lives. The courage and sense of duty is tremendous, heroic, and admirable. These individuals deserve our honour and respect, especially those who have fought and died on behalf of defending our freedoms and the weak around the world. Without courageous good men and women willing to serve and defend, evil had no adversary and proceeds unhindered. We have no idea what our world would look like without them.

I am proud of this crucial part of our Canadian history; we are credited with playing a crucial role in liberating nations in the First and Second World Wars, such as the Netherlands, where suffering was incredible. The Canadians were known for their tenacity and uncompromising courage.

It was also recently Memorial Day in the US, and although this song is specifically written for Canada, it certainly also applies to all who have given their lives there as well.

You can also take a look at my first song from this Songs of Canada series, a cover of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" originally by Bruce Cockburn:

This is part of an ongoing "song theme" series I'll be doing throughout 2020 with regular YouTube commentary on various topics. I'll be sharing the gamut from politics, culture, and art, to love, injustice, and true humanity. I am a Catholic, a conservative patriot, and millennial singer-songwriter and speak in that voice, but without ideology. I care about the truth and about sharing authentic songs, stories, and thoughts.

"Unknown Soldier" by Rita Wolfe

(written on the occasion of the opening of the Canadian Tomb to the Unknown Soldier, May 28th, 2000)

He’s the unknown soldier
He’s coming home
Unknown soldier, no longer to roam
Unknown soldier, you’re someone to me
Whether lost in action or buried at sea

He’s the soldier, without a name
He died without glory
He died without fame
He gave his life so that we could be free
And I’m honouring him in my liberty

Oh, Canada
Oh, Canada

Unknown soldier, I salute you
Your story lives on to inspire those who
Remember your life as the gift that you gave
The monument stands as our vow to keep faith

Unknown soldier, I salute you
