New live video! "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" by Bruce Cockburn (cover by Kay Clarity)

in #ocd-resteem4 years ago

I have long been singing and performing this song, and am happy to share it today. It's a classic by Bruce Cockburn, a great Canadian lyricist and songwriter. It was covered by the Barenaked Ladies (BNL) in the early 90s and made it extremely, quintessentially Canadian in their video, so it's a great introduction to my "Songs for Canada" theme.

YouTube description & lyrics below. (I'd love for you all to subscribe on YouTube as well!)

As to the song's meaning, Bruce Cockburn wrote it in the midst of the Cold War and under that constant sense of threat and dread. He saw a couple at the park and built the song around the idea of the courage it takes to love in the midst of whatever distressing events are taking place--to choose to be a lover in a dangerous time.

Special thanks to Fr. Darryl Millette for the sound & video. Filmed in Saskatoon, Canada.

Lyrics below.

I approach all of these things as a Catholic and a conservative, but I am not an ideologue. These songs spontaneously arose from my human experience and deep thinking about these serious realities. I read extensively and know many who have suffered under these corrupt systems.

"Lovers In A Dangerous Time" (Bruce Cockburn)

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by?
You never seem to stop and open your eyes
One day you're waiting for the sky to fall
The next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin, this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
