Overcoming Jet Lag 101
Planning on traveling to a destination with a different time zone? Here are some tips for you to overcome your jet lag faster.
(1) Begin adjusting to your vacation schedule early. Do not wait until you're already there to get your sleep patterns in check. Maybe try a week or a few days before your trip to sleep/wake up on schedule with the time zone you'll be traveling to.
(2) Try to book a daytime arrival for your destination. It's better to arrive when there is still daylight to kill.
(3) Nap on the airplane. I personally struggle with this one, but try to get sleep if you can. Do not forget your travel pillow and earplugs.
(4) Try a sleep aid. It is recommended to take melatonin if you have trouble falling asleep on the plane since it is a naturally-occurring hormone.
(5) Go natural. If you're more into the natural methods, try a spritz of lavender or rosewater to help you relax. For an added bonus, you can even spray some of it on your sleep mask.
(6) Get your heart rate up. Once you've napped, then it is a good idea to get moving. Walk up and down the plane aisle a few times, or even do some aerobic stretches from your seat.
(7) Eat healthy. Pack plenty of healthy snacks for your trip, and avoid heavy meals if possible.
(8) Relax. This one might actually be my favorite! Traveling can be stressful, so to help alleviate this, try doing some relaxing activities like taking a walk, going to the spa, or taking a bath.
(9) Avoid disturbances during nighttime. When it is time to get ready for bed, cut off the TV, put up your laptop/cell phone, and ensure your curtains securely block out the light from streetlights, etc.
(10) Do your morning workout. To help your body wake up, do not skip on your morning workout. This will not only get your blood flowing but also give you more energy throughout the day to enjoy your vacation.
