Hello Steem-fam! I'm really excited to be participating in this second week of the Steemit Engagement Challenge Season 15. Today's topic: SEC WK2 : The language in my country.

Language is necessary as it helps us express our thoughts, feelings and ideas with one another. Various specie have different means of communication.

Some even have defense mechanisms to alert others when there is a predator.
Sit back and enjoy this quick ride through the language in my country.

What is the name of your country? How many languages can be found in your country?

I’m a Nigerian. I was born and raised in the country as well. Nigeria is one of the most popular and gifted countries both in Africa and the world at large. We are blessed with so many natural resources, happy people, beautiful works of art, music, amazing delicacies and of course a lot of interesting languages.

Nigeria has over 500 languages but 3 are considered the basic ones due to the millions of people speaking the language. They include; Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. English is the official language though, this is cause we were colonized by the British people.

Among the listed languages in your country, how many are you familiar with?

I’m from Enugu state, South East geopolitical zone and we speak Igbo language. There are various Igbo dialects but we all communicate with the central Igbo.

I’m familiar with my native Igbo dialect, the central Igbo, English Language, Pidgin, French language and Yoruba language(thanks to my secondary school in the West).

How has this language improved/helped your life and business?

It has really helped me in school, especially when I’m in a new town. People are more willing to help when they hear you speak their language. Communicating with my colleagues have been easier as well.

Even in my hometown, the fact I know my language has helped me to easily communicate with my people. Even when I get lost(as I’m not used to the environment), it’s easy to ask for directions as they understand what I’m saying.

It’s also important when there is an issue, you can easily alert your people without your attacker’s knowledge.

Are you willing to teach your children these languages? Yes/No. State your reason.

Of course I will teach my children these languages. Nowadays, videos of the Chinese and other non-Nigerians are seen where they speak the Nigerian languages fluently, wouldn’t it be sad to be a Native and ignorant?

Languages bring a sense of belonging, it makes us feel like we have a culture and background. It helps us connect with our communities as well, and helps us to not be left out.

I’m inviting @imohmitch @basil20 and @whizzbro4eva to join this amazing challenge

In saying this “ Nigeria has over 500 languages but 3 are considered the basic ones due to the millions of people speaking the language. They include; Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. English is the official language though, this is cause we were colonized by the British people.” you made a very salient point. Am a Nigerian too and glad to be a part of our great nation. Such a nice post you have here. Best regards
