The wind

in #fiction8 years ago

The wind had been blowing hours already, increasing in strength by the minute. Why hadn’t she chosen to leave this madness? Her work project had ended a week ago, and yet she had decided for a week of sun and beach.

She had found she ‘deserved’ a bit of time off because this project did not go as smooth as she had expected. The company she was sent to was super stubborn and not at all open to her suggestions. It had turned out to be half a year of struggling. The workers there found her arrogant and too European minded, and she had found the workers lazy and not open for anything else than from what they know.

So she had thought that this week would be filled with margharitas and SPF 50. But then this annoying storm came up. She really found that people were making a way too big fuss about all of this. Putting wood in front of their windows, buying the whole supermarket.

She would sit this storm out with a bottle of wine and take her originally scheduled flight home. But then all of a sudden all flights started getting cancelled and she spend more than 10 phonecalls with the airlines demanding they would arrange a flight for her. Flying is always possible, this little storm should not be a problem, it should not be HER problem.

Prepared with her bottle of wine and some nice French cheese she waited until the storm started. Expecting to have a nice nap afterwards and then go to the airport to catch her flight. She even had her Louboutin heels standing there ready next to her personalized suitcase.

But this wind was really something else. She could hear it pounding on the windows as if it really wanted to come inside. She could see the windows bending and all of a sudden two windows cracked at the same time.

Stuff started to fly in the house and she had to make a run for it. The bathroom seemed the best place to go to, here she had an extra door to close at least. Once inside the bathroom she could also see the door bending. The wind kept knocking and knocking on the door until it also bursted open.

She felt the wind gushing through the bathroom and with a gigantic cracking sound it lifted off the whole roof of the building. She was now looking at the pitchblack sky from inside her bathroom. The only place to hide now was in the towelcloset in the bathroom. She crawled in as fast as she could and covered herself with some towels. She was not religious at all but started to mumble a prayer.

After a horrific hour all of a sudden it went silent. She waited five more minutes before she crawled out of her closet. Aggrevated that she was too stubburn to book a hotel room, or to even leave this island, or even more that she had not listened to the people around her who had told her to just leave.

All of this she had ignored. And when she opened the remains of the bathroomdoor she could see that around here was nothing left anymore. Her bathroom with the towelcloset inside when she had been hiding in was the only thing that was left of the whole house.

SO REAL. Happened to a friend of mine in Florida with the last big one... only her house was still standing at the end, albeit damaged. She and her cat spent 36 hours in her closet. Thanks for keeping it real in an easy to read, no-drama, relatable way.

I have somewhere on this blog my own real hurricane story from last year if you are interested in drama ;)

UN_COOL... this story is combined from all what I saw happening just around me

This pretty much describes to a tea the fear and horror of hurricanes. Tornados are much the same but not as much advanced warning. When they tell you to leave, for God's sake leave!

Right?

That is a non fiction piece actually from somebody I know..unblievable! When you have a chance.... vamonos!!!

Im glad Im skipping this crap this year!

Really unbelievable. Usually, I have more warning when something is coming than the folks here do. We are better equipped to get information quickly. Three days after we had a tropical storm last year, the civil defence came around and told the people that there was going to be a storm! A little too late...

Very well written.. I think there may be some non-fiction in this story too, right? :) Well done! I like it..

Lots of non fiction in there actually!

Lots of real life stories combined to a big fiction ;)
