Rare types of clouds

in #photography8 years ago

What is the cloud? This is the smallest water drops or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere and visible in the sky from the surface of the earth. The clouds, also, are the famous lyrical image that is associated with peace and serenity.

Clouds are everywhere, in every part of our planet. But in nature there are also rare types of clouds, which very few people were lucky enough to see.

A great overview of the most rare types of clouds.

Noctilucent (night shining) clouds

Another name for clouds — night shining clouds — exactly matches their appearance. During the day, even against the background of a clear sky, these clouds are not visible, because they are very thin: through them you can clearly see the stars.

Speakers clouds

Speakers cloud (Shelf clouds) make a strong impression. They can usually be seen before a storm, although they may precede and front of relatively cold air.

Rough wave (Undulatus asperatus)

Only in 2009 it was proposed to highlight this unusual weather phenomenon to a single type of cloud — Undulatus asperatus. The last time a new cloud formations recorded in the international Atlas of clouds already in 1951!

Approximate translation of the name of a new type of cloud "rough waves".

It looks the most sinister and diabolical cloud. They are like the churning sea, dark, bizarre "rumpled" surface.

Videobritney clouds

These clouds (Mammatus clouds) have an unusual cellular form. Are rare and mainly in the tropical latitudes, as they are associated with the formation of tropical cyclones.

Cell of clouds typically have a size of about 0.5 km, and often clearly distinguishable, although there are blurred edges.

Clouds have a gray-blue color as the main clouds, however, sunlight can appear Golden or reddish.

Radoznali in the cloud

This is a very rare natural phenomenon associated with the appearance in the cloud of flowers, similar to those observed in the oil film on puddles. It is usually found in altocumulus, cirrocumulus clouds and lenticular (see above) the clouds.

When sunlight collides with small water drops or ice crystals in the cloud have different size, the refraction of light causes the colors, which is called rabenou.

Wow, great photos! World is beautiful :) First photo is my new wallpaper :)

I actually didn't know there were names for these different cloud shapes. Nice info, nice images. Did you take any of these pictures your self?

Clouds are epic for sure! I once saw a "cloud ball" filled with thunder and lightning down in Byron bay, Australia. People flocked up to a the mountain to see the truly mind boggling event.

Great collection @kapets
